Job Description
The Land Drainage and Flood Risk Management Section of the Council has an interesting and challenging workload in reducing flood risk across the district and we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic person to join our team. Wakefield District covers an area of 337km2, there are about 120 watercourses across the district with a combined length of over 300km. We are looking to recruit an ambitous person who is interested in furthering their career in Flood Risk Management. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in the field and be able to manage and motivate a small team of engineers and technicians to achieve the Council's Local Flood Risk Management Strategy objectives. The overall purpose of the role will be to work as part of the Land Drainage and Flood Risk Management Team to reduce the risk of flooding in Wakefield District and to ensure that the Council fulfils its duties both under the Land Drainage and the Flood and Water Management Acts. This post will take a lead role and be involved in the Catchment Flood Risk elements of the team's work which includes identification of flood risk in the district, management of assets and projects and responses to flood related complaints and flood investigations. The main responsibilities of the post will be to manage the identification of future areas of work through the development of a catchment flood risk strategy, manage the ongoing audit and inspection of the district's watercourses, targeted maintenance of known flood hotspots, manage the requests for service and subsequent flood investigations, carry out the feasibility and design of minor flood risk reduction schemes and the project management of larger schemes and the submission of bids for grant funding. Close liaison with outside bodies will be required such as the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water. In house training within the Team will be given and additional external training will be available if required. You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team who work closely together to provide the support and guidance necessary to achieve its objectives. Flooding to people's property is a distressing and emotional event and as part of your role you will be liaising with local residents that have been flooded, Councillors and officers from other Council sections so good communications skills are essential. The work involves being both outside and in the office, as part of a team but often unaccompanied. As the work involves visting a number of sites around the district a full driving license is essential. A casual car allowance scheme is in operation and pool cars are available. The role offers a full range of local government terms and conditions including flexible working, pension and access to further qualifications based training funded by the Council's Apprenticeship Levy.
