Job Title: Technician School / Directorate: Cardiff School of Biosciences Advert: Please note that this job is open to current members of Cardiff University staff only Technician Cardiff School of Biosciences We are pleased to offer 2 part time technician positions, supporting the project entitled "Developing an NPC1 activity assay using the fluorescent substrate AQ2 for use in basic research and drug discovery". The successful candidate's will have an NVQ level 2/GCSE level A-C or equivalent qualification or work related experience, experience of performing experiments in a biological laboratory, knowledge of molecular biology techniques such as PCR/Western blotting and accurate record keeping and documentation skills. These positions are part-time, 8.75 hours per week (25%), fixed term position available from 1st October 2020 to 30th September 2021. Salary: 19,612 - 21,814 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 3). Post Reference Number: 9914BR Job Description: To provide support for an Academy of Medical Sciences funded project to develop an activity assay for the lysosomal NPC1 protein for use in drug development for childhood neurodegenerative disorders. We would welcome applications from undergraduate students seeking training placement year opportunities, which would otherwise be unpaid. Key Duties * Assist with the planning and performing of experiments in accordance with the aims and objectives of projects/programmes, after an initial training period the post holder will be expected to work independently, processing, critically analysing and recording data although supervision will be available as required. * Set up experimental systems and research apparatus, assisting students and staff in the use and construction of equipment and apparatus and with tests and experiments * Participate in the development and modification of specialist experimental approaches * Take responsibility for stock levels, security, maintenance and cleanliness of materials, apparatus and equipment within work area * Record and perform detailed analysis on data, using predetermined procedures, including responsibility for maintaining databases * Support the department in the implementation of new procedures and systems General Duties * Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties * Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity * Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role Salary Range Max.: 21,814 Grade: Grade 3 Salary Range Min.: 19,612 Job Category: Technical Career Pathway: Technical Person Specification: IMPORTANT NOTE: When submitting your supporting statement, you must provide evidence as to how you meet each of the essential (and desirable if applicable) criteria below.
