We are a very large District General hospital, with a successful track record of delivering high quality acute medical and surgical services to 500,000 patients across West Berkshire. The Trust is one of the largest general hospital trusts in the country, and is Reading's biggest employer. The appointment This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate aspiring to a career in Acute Medicine, Speciality Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine or General Practice. The successful applicant will be part of a broad team consisting of 8 consultant physicians, specialty trainees in acute medicine and internal medicine, specialty doctors, GP trainees, FY3 doctors, physician associates and advanced nurse practitioners. The post can be for 6 or 12 months. The successful candidate will work within the Department of Acute Medicine, managing patients and providing cover to the Acute Medical Unit. The Acute Medicine team is responsible for 4 areas, and the post-holder will be involved in the management of patients in all these areas: * The Higher Monitoring Unit (HMU), a 7 bedded unit for the most severely unwell medical patients outside of ICU, providing a 2:1 nursing ratio, continuous non-invasive monitoring and level 2 respiratory support (non-invasive ventilation and high flow nasal oxygen). * The Acute Medical Unit (AMU). * The Short Stay Unit (SSU). * The Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit (AECU). In all our areas there are daily consultant ward rounds. All of our consultants are trained and work in a second specialty including intensive care medicine, geriatric medicine, respiratory medicine, stroke medicine and endocrinology. This provides a huge breadth of knowledge for the management of our patients, and we work closely together as a team, discussing our patients in a daily MDT. We have an award-winning embedded therapy team, providing physiotherapy cover to HMU and enabling same-day discharges of frail patients requiring home re-enablement and care. We have a team of embedded interface geriatricians, who are specialists in managing patients with acute frailty presentations. There are many excellent training and educational opportunities available to the successful applicant. There are acute medicine teaching sessions at least weekly and we are currently developing or in-house simulation training. Many of our consultants and specialty doctors are trained in thoracic ultrasound and FICE and FAMUS echocardiography, with frequent ultrasound training sessions. Some of our former FY3 doctors have become competent in ultrasound whilst working here, and our FY3 doctors are involved in Quality Improvement Projects, research and teaching.
