Position Details Physics and Astronomy University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range 27,511 to 30,046. With potential progression once in post to 33,797 Full time Fixed term contract until 31st March 2022 Closing date - 8th July 2020 Job Summary Be responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the MC40 Cyclotron and the Accelerator Driven Neutron Irradiation Facility (ADNIF) as directed by the Technical Manager. This will include unsociable hours. Assist with the design, development and manufacture of new equipment associated with neutron beam production at the ADNIF. Be responsible for the maintenance and development of both accelerators and associated ancillary equipment; including diagnosing and rectifying faults promptly and effectively and ensuring minimum disruption to running time. Liaise with and assist outside users of both the MC40 and the ADNIF. Main Duties The MC40 cyclotron is a flexible particle accelerator which is used intensively and supports a range of research activities both within the University, nationally and internationally. Some examples include: Production of positron emitting isotopes for the UoB positron emission particle tracking work Fundamental nuclear physics Development of medical imaging for proton cancer therapy Characterisation of the radiation hardness of materials to be used in the ATLAS upgrade at the Large Hadron Collider Characterisation of radiation damage for nuclear reactor materials in collaboration with Rolls-Royce Development of new tracer isotopes in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory
