Job Description
Purpose of the Role: The role is part of the Finance Controllership team of the Ardonagh Group, which comprises senior individuals including the Group Financial Controller. The role will report to the Head of Technical Accounting & Advisory and will be responsible for addressing complex, significant and one-off accounting issues (involving IFRS, FRS 102 and FRS 101) impacting the entire Ardonagh Group, as well as significant issues specific to individual segments/divisions. Job Description: The role will be responsible for: * Revenue recognition; * Hedge accounting/ financial instruments; * Share-based payments; * Lease accounting; * Acquisitions/disposals accounting (the Ardonagh Group is highly acquisitive); * Goodwill impairment; * Transitioning subsidiaries from FRS 102 to FRS 101; * Financial statements review; * Group accounting policy manual; * Numerous other complex accounting matters. Ardonagh is a large (circa 7,000 employees and growing), acquisitive and highly complex private-equity backed group. There are consequently a multitude of significant and one-off technical accounting issues to address. This role involves regular interactions with the business and requires timely decision-making, whilst nevertheless documenting important decisions in an accounting memorandum or briefing note. Updating of accounting policy manuals is an important part of the role, but the primary focus of this job is on resolving business issues (application, not just theory). This role requires a technically-minded person who is delivery-focussed and a doer. Strong oral and written communication skills are a prerequisite. You will interact on a regular basis with senior individuals, auditors and legal advisors. Ardonagh recently announced that it will not be renewing the lease on its head office and that its Group functions, including Controllership and the Group CFO, will be home-based henceforth (not just whilst coronavirus persists), but with some travel to London (expected to be approximately once per fortnight). Key Role Accountabilities: Functional knowledge/ technical knowledge : * Knowledge of regulatory, tax, legal and accounting matters, in particular technical accounting. * Working to deadlines. Business Expertise : * Effective written and oral communication skills, so as to be able to communicate complex issues in a simple manner. * Ability to challenge, enquire and analyse. * Ability to apply existing skills to other tasks as required. Driving continuous improvement and innovation : * Analytical and problem-solving skills. * Ability to present information in a concise, efficient and professional manner to senior management. Building self-insight & relationships : * Strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Qualifications and Experience: * Education - Degree (or equivalent). * Specialised Knowledge - IFRS, FRS 102, FRS 101. * Microsoft Office - Intermediate or advanced level. * Professional Certification - ACA, with significant post-qualification experience (including Big 4 and industry experience). * Experience - Technical accounting/accounting policy, particularly IFRS. Person Specification: Essential: * ACA, fully qualified, with significant post-qualification experience. * Big 4 (within external audit) and industry experience. * IFRS technical accounting/accounting policy experience. * Ability to write well, and strong communication skills generally. Desirable: * FRS 102/ FRS 101 experience. * Strong Excel skills. * Strong organisational skills and attention to detail. * Initiative, proactivity, enquiring approach, resourcefulness. * Adaptability, ability to embrace and respond positively to change. * Analytical and investigative skills, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, individually and collaboratively. * Ability to work under pressure. * Integrity and assertiveness when dealing with complex and/or business critical issues. * Flexibility of working practices, priorities and hours to meet business demands.
