Job Description

Overview Reporting to the Principal Rail Operations Specialist responsible for the Rail Industry Standards for traffic operation and management, you will play a key role in helping to deliver RSSB's mission for a better, safer railway by joining our Rail Operations team. You will apply your knowledge and experience to influence all aspects of railway operations by articulating industry-agreed decisions in national standards and beyond: your role will also involve active contribution to other areas of the business, particularly the national research, development and innovation programme, and RSSB's commercial activities. Responsibilities * analysing proposals to develop or change national standards to determine whether they meet the criteria to be taken forward; * authoring changes to national standards, and capturing the rationale for these changes in RSSB's content management system; * delivering high quality outputs that are accepted by the wider industry and result in tangible benefits; * representing RSSB as a subject matter expert; * responding to technical enquiries in a timely manner; * providing technical input and support to the national research, development and innovation programme; * supporting the delivery of the standards strategy and the RSSB's Business Plan commitments to time, quality and cost; * supporting the development of business cases by working collaboratively with colleagues from other disciplines across the business; * supporting the development of robust delivery plans that ensure industry agreed processes are adhered to, and take into consideration the needs of RSSB's members and stakeholders; * support the development and delivery of RSSB's commercial offering, including the delivery of accident and incident investigation training; * advising RSSB members and stakeholders on the role of national standards within the framework that governs the rail sector; and * engaging and collaborating with RSSB's members, who represent all aspects of the GB rail sector. Qualifications * an understanding of the operational railway and demonstrable ability to apply your specialist knowledge; * an in-depth knowledge or experience of rail operations with an appreciation of emerging technologies, including in-cab signalling; * analytical skills and the ability to apply them in the context of the railway system; * experience of undertaking research and interpreting complex information and communicating it clearly; * demonstrable use of your initiative to learn new concepts and solve problems; * proven critical thinking skills to determine problems and solve them; * a flexible approach and ability to adapt to different working circumstances; * a collaborative style; * strong communication skills; * strong administration and organisational skills; * strong writing skills with a keen eye for detail and the ability to understand technical documents; * the ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external business relationships; * intermediate competence with Microsoft Office 365; * an appreciation of the target audience and user behaviour - how people read and absorb information; * experience of adapting communication to brand style and other guidelines; * an understanding of project management principles and the ability to support project managers with project delivery; and * a demonstrable commitment to personal development including a willingness and the initiative to learn from others.
