Job Description
Job Title: Data Centre Operations Engineer Reporting To: Manager, Data Centre Operations Department: Operations Location: Basildon, UK DESCRIPTION/ JOB PURPOSE The Data Centre Operations Engineer (DCOE) is primarily responsible in ensuring that all activities carried out in the Data Centre & Access Centre's conform to Data Centre Procedures and industry best practice. The DCOE will carry out their activities across all Data centre and Access centre facilities in Europe, these works could be project based or tasks received via incident management or workflow management tools. In all cases the DCOE will ensure that Change Control rules are followed and support documentation is appropriate and correct. The role will also be responsible for carrying out daily checks in their areas of responsibility, ensuing security is maintained, managing third parties and ensuring all work activity is captured and updates entered into the Data Centre management tool, or into the workflow management/incident management tool, Service Now. The DCOE will support and execute all Data Centre capacity management for cables and hardware on behalf of the Data Centre Engineering & Operations team such that each item is recorded in a central database/spread sheet; this will be done for company as well as colocation customers. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Assist in providing a 24 x 7 support service to internal & external customers and to support, develop, and implement new services in-line with customer & business requirements * To provide first line and where required, second line technical troubleshooting * Have an awareness of the environmental controls within the Data halls and other IT technical areas, i.e. Temperature, humidity & power consumption, etc. * Installation, relocation and recovery of Network, Server and Storage hardware to manufacturer standards and industry best practice. * Repair of hardware to major component level (e.g. hard disk, NIC card, memory) across a broad range of vendor equipment. * Execution of all work to Data Centre work process & procedure. * Manage the goods in/out process for the Basildon storage facility and keep full records as directed for all incoming/outgoing assets and a full availability list of all items in storage. * Receipt of damaged/failed hardware internally and replacement through Return Merchandise Authorisation (RMA) process * Carry out monthly audits of items in store and produce a report of all anomalies * Manage asset record updates, tracking and placing assets as to their location and status (deployed, ceased etc.) * Ensure that all records are updated following any installations, moves or changes * Carry out daily housekeeping checks of the data halls, including device status observation and record their findings * Control Data Centre stocks (copper/fibre patch leads, patch panels, connectors etc.) and report appropriately. * To provide holiday and sickness cover at short notice and be flexible in their working patterns to support and maintain OLA's & SLA's * Maintain a duty of care for everyone on site - immediately report any health and safety concerns, or anything unsafe or potentially dangerous PERSON SPECIFICATION * The ability to travel internationally * Demonstrate previous experience of working in isolation and on 24x7 Shift basis. * Experienced in Data Centre Protocol and structured cabling infrastructures * Experience in operating systems (Windows, Linux ..) and networking equipment (switches, firewalls..) * Experience with Hardware : Client, Dell, SUN , Cisco , Juniper, others * Pro-active and flexible with ability to work either as part of a team or as an individual * Effective written and verbal communication at all levels * Strong attention to detail * Desire to learn and progress within the company * Experience of hardware manufacturer installation standards and knowledge of copper and fibre cabling installations and standards, with preference given to industry recognised certifications. * 3-5+ years' experience working in Data Centre environments * Basic network knowledge and good experience of a broad range of IT hardware; particularly Juniper and Client. * Basic understanding of Data Centre, power, cooling and electrical systems. * Awareness of power and infrastructure management software and monitoring tools, such as FieldView, Sentry Power Manager, APC Struxureware and/or Client software similar to Andover and Niagara systems is a plus. * Experience of working in an ITIL controlled environment with knowledge of Change Control, Incident Management & Problem Management processes. * Good experience using Microsoft Office, Visio and CRM databases, with particular preference given to Service Now * Familiar with Data Centre Infrastructure Management software, particularly PatchManager * Ability to prioritise effectively * Ability to manage 3rd party contract staff/companies working within the DC Core Competencies Competencies are the skills and behaviors that are c
