Are you interested in becoming a volunteer Mentor to help ex-offenders settle back into their local community? Change Grow Live is pleased to announce an exciting Mentoring opportunity to support ex-offenders being released from prison, who also have substance misuse issues. Mentors will provide one to one support to those leaving prison custody to proactively plan for the future. This includes support with accommodation, benefits and engagement with Change Grow Live drug and alcohol service. As a volunteer Mentor your role will be to engage with prisoners nearing the end of their sentence and immediately after their release, with the aim of encouraging them to engage with Change Grow Live and other key support agencies. You will meet ex-offenders at the prison gate on the day of their release. Your role will be to accompany the person to their initial appointments, help them think through and make good plans and provide them with encouragement. At times you may be called upon to act as the ex-offender's advocate if they are not being treated fairly. We will teach you how to establish clear lines of communication, and make referrals to agencies that may be helpful to the ex-offender. E.g. Probation, Housing and Welfare Benefits. Change Grow Live Mentor support is designed to be short-term assistance for the immediate transition between prison and the community. Those requiring longer-term support are referred to other community organizations where appropriate. Mentor meetings will take place in both public and office settings, ususly lasting around 1 hour, although shorter back to back appointments are also conducted. Mentors will attend a 3 day's Change Grow Live Induction and volunteer training programme. This is enhanced by a further day's training "Volunteering with Offenders in the Community". Included in this training is interviewing skills, as well as setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries. Supervision will be provided by your Volunteer Co-ordinator to ensure that you have support throughout your role. Mentors will be required to send their Volunteer Co-ordinator a short Contact Report outlining their progress with a Service User after every meeting. 1/4/2021 This post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at an enhanced level.
