Senior Principal, High Conviction Equities (HCE) Our Company Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (Ontario Teachers') is the largest single-profession pension plan in Canada. It was established as an independent organization in 1990, and it has now built an internationally recognized reputation for innovation and leadership in investment management and member services. With C$201.4 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2019, Ontario Teachers' invests the pension fund internationally and administers the pensions of 327,000 active and retired teachers in Ontario. Today, the plan's members include 185,000 teachers in elementary and secondary schools in Ontario, 142,000 pensioners (including 65,000 inactive members - former teachers who kept their pensions with Teachers'). At C$5.7 billion, the annual pension payroll is one of the largest of its type in Canada. Ontario Teachers' is headquartered in Toronto and has investment offices based in London and Hong Kong. The opportunity This opportunity is with the High Conviction Equities (HCE) team, which invests across the equity asset class along the liquidity range of pre-IPO, PIPEs and high conviction public companies. As a Senior Principal, you will have a critical role in a wide array of strategy, relationship building, investment and leadership activities. Who you'll work with Our Equities department consists of a team of approximately 120 professionals and focuses on both Private and Public investments. What you'll do * Lead or support in all aspects of a deal from origination, screening, due diligence, structuring, negotiation, to portfolio management and exit * Support deal negotiations and execution of agreements and other legal documents with relevant counterparties * Supervise the preparation of investment recommendations * Present investment recommendations to the relevant internal committees, as required * Remain involved in the business and work with management teams, partners and others, as relevant to deliver on the investment thesis once a transaction has been completed and otherwise drive value creation. * Deliver on internal requirements required to support the portfolio, for example, semi-annual valuations, portfolio reports * Support talent recruitment, retention and development. Talent development activities include ensuring team members develop core technical skills and gain exposure to all facets of a transaction * Build effective partnerships with key partners globally including like-minded investors, entrepreneurs, equity-focused banks and other service providers * Handle critical diligence and research streams * Provide disciplined thinking, sound judgment and courage of conviction, with a willingness to take a balanced risk. This will also entail stepping in and intervening directly and effectively when required. * Be able to develop a good knowledge of the economic/characteristics, conditions and trends of a wide range of industries and of their investment characteristics. * Partnering and communicating with the broader team in Toronto and OTPP investment team in Asia ensuring appropriate parties are kept informed and engaged on transactions or initiatives What you'll need * You will be exceptionally curious and driven and thrive in an entrepreneurial environment. You will be flexible, unphased by setbacks and able to pivot quickly to move forward. * You are a risk taker and comfortable with ambiguity but able to balance increased risk taking with strategic and operational judgement. * Proven work experience in bespoke negotiations involving complex transactions in both public and private markets across sectors * Outstanding interpersonal, communication and presentation skills * Excellent analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth analysis * Be a strong teammate and willing to develop other team members * Entrepreneurial, proactive, results and growth oriented * Possess a global mindset-oriented approach to working on opportunities * Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant business experience in a similar industry * Strong educational background, Bachelor degree or other relevant academic background * Proficiency in English is required and another one or more European language is highly preferred. Has good global perspectives and multi-cultural sensitivity. * Ability to travel frequently as required * An ability to balance opposing priorities, work independently with minimal direction, lead projects and thrive in a high performance team environment * Collaborate with a number of professionals including other members of OTPP in London, Toronto & Hong Kong and outside professionals such as management teams of our assets, investment bankers, board directors and lawyers.
