**Role Summary:** + GE Grid Solutions is a provider of products and systems to the Electrical Power Transmission and Distribution sector. + The Substation Protection Relay Products Business is a cutting-edge technology provider for mission critical applications in power system protection and control. **Essential Responsibilities:** The candidate will be part of a global hardware team and be responsible for Maintenance of existing designs plus delivery of new designs into protection and control hardware platforms. Activities will cover: + Low power mixed signal designs for data acquisition, sensors, status monitoring and control. + High performance, low power processing platforms running real time operating systems. + FPGA / SOC based solutions for DSP filtering, communications controllers and highspeed processing interfaces. + Redundant Ethernet topologies and serial communications interfaces. + Wide input, high efficiency power supplies. + The ideal candidate will deliver innovative and practical solutions that satisfy diverse requirements including a wide input voltage range and high reliability. + The successful candidate will be a team player, with a methodical and structured approach to work and excellent verbal and written communication skills. + Maintain & resolve defects for existing platform/Hardware design releases. + Resolve obsolescence issues for existing platform/Hardware design releases. + Support and Resolve customer/production related issues occurring on existing product designs. + Plan and deliver innovative designs for new projects to stringent quality standards. + Ensure products comply with relevant safety & environmental impact legislation. + Maintain ownership of designs and documentation throughout the full project lifecycle. + Keep abreast of latest developments in technologies, tools and processes. The successful engineer will have a proven track record in digital and mixed signal design and will have a majority of the following technical skills: + Experience in the hardware development for Transmission / Distribution protection products, existing experience in hardware development for the MiCOM platform is preferred. + H/W Architecture - Able to define several hardware architectural options and trade off against defined criteria to identify optimal hardware solution. + Bus technologies / Communications - Good knowledge of main communications technologies. + Skilled in application of modern tools and techniques for ensuring quality and reliability (RAMS) in H/W and/or S/W designs. - Has solid practical experience in the application of techniques and processes used in the field of RAMS engineering. + EMC Design and Legislation knowledge - Good understanding of theory of EMC. + Design for Manufacture/Assembly. Manufacturing Processes - Good knowledge of the manufacturing processes and design technique. + Design for Test. Test processes - Good knowledge of the test processes and design techniques. + Microprocessor / DSP Architectures - Good knowledge of architectural trends of current microprocessor and DSPs. + Digital signal processing - Expert knowledge of digital signal processing theory and simulation and modelling tools. + Simulation / Modelling - Good knowledge of main modelling and simulation tool solutions. + FPGA / CPLD development - Good knowledge of major device architectures with a good understanding of the VHDL language. + ECAD schematic entry & PCB layout - Good knowledge of ECAD tools for schematic entry and PCB layout. + Product Safety - Understand main aspects of products safety. + Experience in the hardware development for Transmission / Distribution protection products. + Knowledge of WEEE and RoHS legislation. **Qualifications/Requirements:** The candidate will have solid experience of the full hardware development lifecycle from requirements gathering to delivery of the finished product. In addition, he/she must possess the following skills and experience: + Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. + Have the ability to multitask. + Have excellent attention to detail with a high standard of work. + A passion for well-designed hardware architecture and circuit designs. A successful candidate would be required to have the following experience: + Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering or the same knowledge/experience. + Major hardware design experience. + Knowledge of elec transmission & distribution industry operating practices for protection & control products.
