Overview

About the role This is a new role within our Tech Team that addresses a growing requirement for someone to take responsibility for the design and rendering of our web-based application. Working with designs and brand guidelines from our excellent partner design agencies, you will be using your creative and meticulous nature to build and arrange front-end HTML/CSS components ready to pass on to developers, and within the application itself. You’ll be responsible for defining conventions (should we use OOCSS, ACSS, BEM, SMACSS etc), how we hook into automated testing and JavaScript, and be able to develop a bullet-proof SCSS framework whilst simultaneously depreciating legacy code. Although we need someone with solid technical development skills, the role also requires a keen eye for good UX/design. You’ll be our authority on how our house brand and style gets applied, so having experience in both would be advantageous. Maybe you’re a developer that’s worked on projects that involve UX, or a designer who’s learnt to code. Some PHP and JS exposure will be needed, but ultimately, you’ll be fully supported by our existing team of experienced developers. What technical skills and experience are we looking for? • Excellent knowledge of HTML, CSS and associated compilers (SCSS, LESS etc) (3 years) • Good understanding of CSS design patterns (Eg BEM, Flexbox etc) • Good understanding of responsive design • Good understanding of browser inspector tools • Some working knowledge of development using PHP • Some working knowledge of development using JS • Some knowledge of source control with Git would be beneficial • Familiarity with Adobe CC Soft Skills • Able to be an advocate and guardian for our design and brand • Ability to manage external vendors (design and marketing agencies) • Able to justify and instruct developers on your technical conventions • Able to justify and quantify your decisions at a stakeholder level • Being proactive; o Seeking out tasks should you have capacity o Identifying poorly defined processes or standards, and taking ownership of them until they are resolved • Ability to self-direct your work – you will be the sole person in this unique space • Assisting the Head of Technology/Operations Team with future planning • Contributing to a fair, respectful and friendly environment Additional benefits • Holidays: 25 days plus bank holidays • Pension: Employer and Employee Contribution to Workplace Pension Scheme following completion of 3-month probationary period. (Currently 3% employer contribution) • Bonus: Eligible to participate in Company’s Bonus scheme (currently based on the Company achieving set targets and the employee achieving personal performance targets) • Flexible working: We understand and accommodate reasonable requests for flexible hours and occasional remote working. We are happy to talk about your specific requirements. • Conferences: We endeavour to purchase tickets of your choice at least once per year.
