Trainee Teacher/TA with cover responsibilities (H5) 32.5 hrs per week, Term Time Only Salary Scale £18,472-£19,839 equivalent to FT salary range £24,030-£25,809 JOB DESCRIPTION At the heart of a successful school is the provision of high quality teaching and learning, the effective use of resources, improving standards of achievement for all pupils and the promotion of pupils’ personal development and well being. This role plays a key part in this provision by a commitment to the school’s ethos, by liaising effectively with all teachers, supporting students to make progress and providing quality supervision when the regular class teacher is absent to support high standards of learning. You will draw on a wide range of abilities and, in turn, offer a range of experience and provide administrative assistance when not in class. You will need to be confident with positive communication skills, have a good standard of education, an interest in how young people learn with the intention of progressing into teacher training to gain qualified teacher status. Previous experience in a school would be an advantage. You will be expected to work as part of a team, liaise with teaching staff and the Inclusion Team. JOB PURPOSE To support students in class with their learning. This may be supporting individuals, groups or supervising the whole class. This may provide good training to embark on an initial teacher training course. REPORTING The post holder will report to the Assistant Headteacher. DUTIES Help students make progress in a range of classroom settings including working with individuals, small groups and whole classes where the assigned teacher is not present. Supervise work that has been set by a teacher for individual, groups or classes of students, and to follow the teacher’s instructions. Liaise with the appropriate staff regarding the work that has been set so that the requirements of it are fully understood. Use knowledge of students’ particular needs to adapt materials and approaches, in liaison with the teacher, ensuring they are able to fully access the planned learning. Use knowledge of how children learn to offer guidance and support to students as necessary. When required, manage whole classes ensuring the good order and safety of the students being supervised in classrooms whilst they are undertaking this work to ensure a constructive, purposeful working environment. Understand, adhere and implement the School’s Behaviour Policy and report, as appropriate using the school’s agreed referral procedures, on the behaviour of pupils during the class and on any problems arising. Ensure that feedback is returned to the appropriate teacher following each lesson. Keep accurate attendance records of students when supervising lessons in a teacher’s absence. Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school’s policies and procedures. Assist Senior Leadership Group, Operations Manager and Heads of Department with routine administrative tasks. Be willing to receive training in First Aid and provide support in the Medical Room in the absence of the School Nurse. Attend all necessary meetings required of the post including those relating to professional development. Undertake such other duties as may be directed by the Headteacher, commensurate with the grading of the post. Confidence with the ability to communicate effectively, clearly and accurately both orally and in writing. The ability to follow instructions as set in order for students to meet the tasks required. To have a good understanding of learning needs and how to support students to remove barriers to learning. The ability to work as a member of a team and to have sensitivity and tact in dealing with a wide range of young adults and people. Good literacy and numeracy skills, educated to degree level with the intention of progressing into teacher training (dependant on acceptance onto an initial teacher training programme). A commitment to the positive behaviours of students. Flexibility in their approach to all aspects of school life. The ability to access all areas of the school. General administrative skills. Good interpersonal skills, a high level of initiative, energy and enthusiasm. Excellent punctuality and attendance.
