Overview
Development Editor - Caribbean and International Curriculum Locatio n: London, with up to 6 weeks per year in the market subject to requirement The Caribbean and International Curriculum team publishes curriculum-based print and digital content, from pre-primary to upper secondary, for the Caribbean and international schools markets. The Caribbean department has been producing resources for over 70 years, with publishing led by curriculums and Ministry adoptions in individual countries. Our International Curriculum department has been recently created for schools following international English language curriculums, in particular where English is not the mother tongue of teachers and students. We are looking for a Development Editor to develop high-quality, curriculum-led content for international markets. You will support the Commissioning Editors in developing sound initial product concepts, and then take full responsibility for developing these products with the authors, up until handover of manuscript to the editorial production team. This role provides an opportunity to fully engage with and influence the content and to input in to the look and feel of a product. Collaboration with in-house Sales and Marketing both in the UK and overseas, Production and Design teams, as well as agents, representatives and key stakeholders in the markets is vital in ensuring that the publishing meets the needs of the key audience and stakeholders. Responsibilities Support the Commissioning Editors in developing sound product concepts for investment approval – including scoping, costing, market testing and sample design creation. Brief authors clearly and in line with approved concept, work with and support author teams for the duration of the writing period to ensure that content is written to brief and submitted on time Work thoroughly and with detail on the manuscript of components to ensure suitability of content, syllabus match, approach, language level and cultural sensitivity Develop and use specialist knowledge of and contacts in the Caribbean and international regions to ensure that resources are pedagogically, culturally and structurally appropriate for the market Manage manuscript peer review process, including finding and briefing reviewers, collating comments and feeding back to author, as well as running regionally-based development workshops Brief and manage freelance development editors where necessary and oversee work to ensure quality control Liaise with the Managing Editorial team after handover to facilitate smooth production of manuscripts – including reviewing and resolving copyedit queries, inputting on photo and artwork selection, and feeding back on proofs Liaise with Marketing and Sales teams on promotional material/information as required Experience, skills and qualifications Essential Educated to degree level or equivalent Demonstrable, hands-on experience of developing and editing market-focussed educational resources within a publishing environment, including the peer review process An appreciation for a range of learning and teaching styles, products and pedagogies Excellent command of the English language, with attention to detail, quality control and an ability to engage with content on a detailed level Ability to communicate constructive criticism sensitively and confidently to authors Ability to own and manage multiple, multi-level projects simultaneously to tight deadlines A working knowledge of editorial and design costs in publishing, and budget management Awareness of publishing processes, how they impact manuscript development, and time and cost implications of editorial decisions Desirable Knowledge/experience of Caribbean and/or international markets Market research experience in the educational sector and strong grasp of market research methods Experience of working with a range of digital media Experience managing freelance editors
