We believe that wherever learning flourishes so do people. Background Information: UK Qualifications Development is divided into a number of discrete development areas. Traditionally this has been organised around platforms, each platform broadly handling one kind of qualification. We are transforming towards a less siloed, more holistic view of quals capabilities and the Delivery Leads are required to help drive towards the future state, while also delivering projects that bring business value. Additionally Pearson has a plan to restructure our IT systems to be simpler, to be cloud based, to be more reactive to change, to be cheaper to maintain, and to deliver more scope for global reuse. Purpose: To manage the delivery of capabilities and support the projects they enable. To work towards the strategic end state and make decisions which balance the tactical against the strategic end state Key Accountabilities: Ensuring delivery of key milestones by offshore technical teams Ensure agreed architecture is followed for both software and deployment Ensure controls are established, followed and maintained to ensure high quality delivery of software Work with solution architecture and programme management to help shape strategy and deliver projects within agreed frameworks Work with colleagues to ensure high quality and consistent approach to development and support Business Development Develop strong ties with key business and technology stakeholders to understand the context UK quals works in, and help drive solutions for the business Assist with planning of business activities to ensure smooth running of qualifications and to aid the company with technical advances Staff Management, Motivation and Development Work with colleagues to ensure a consistent and high quality approach to software development in mutually agreed technologies Drive the teams to use new technology, standards and principles within the wider Pearson goals and accepted target state Mentor and develop teams to achieve personal development goals and contribute to the transformation of UK Quals Technical Leadership Contribute to the common future state regarding technology, development and support process, and emerging tools Inspire the team to try new things and take advantage of new technology and tools Governance, Security and Policy Work with solution architects to ensure software projects address security, hosting and other policies within Pearson as are applicable Raise awareness of systems which do or may breach those policies Reinforce the importance of those policies with staff Key Challenges: UK Quals is undergoing an aggressive transformation of all of it’s systems, most of which are legacy and need to be replaced over time, requiring strong leadership as well as a clear development plan for staff UK Quals is a large part of the revenue for the UK, and is broken into several business units which can create conflicts of resources and priorities Much of what we do is subject to Ofqal regulation, as well as GDPR and other regulatory factors The UK Quals business is extremely risk averse, so any major change requires a high level of assurance Many of the staff have been at Pearson a long time, and have not had the opportunity to learn the technology and skills required to transform Core Competencies Required: Providing a customer focused service Effective communication on process, design and development Working with others to achieve common goals Contributing to and delivering goals in a changing and legacy environment Taking a creative and innovative approach to work Supporting and mentoring staff through transformation of process and systems Have a technical background in architecture, development or testing software Strong experience delivering projects using SCRUM, XP or similar Other Requirements Strong background in cloud-based deployments and cloud migration Working knowledge of at least one high-level language Good understanding of modern software engineering principles Working knowledge of RDBMS and NoSQL based persistence models Additional Competencies Desirable: Knowledge of legacy Windows deployment model and TFS Experience in a regulated environment (EDU, Pharma or equivalent) Experience in production with Amazon Web Services Experience working within the SAFe framework Previous Experience Essential: Extensive experience (3 years) as lead developer or development manager. Experience as either a programmer or tester within an agile team, ideally for a web-based or customer facing system. Desirable: 5 years experience as lead developer or development manager. Previous experience within a Windows based environment. Experience in a high stakes environment IT Literacy Essential: Technically proficient with a strong IT background. Extensive exposure to modern cloud based development and deployment Good working knowledge of at least one high level language Experience with modern cloud based DevOps Desirable: Experience with windows based development and deployment Experience with Linux and containerized deployment Experience with serverless deployments Personal Style and Behaviour The role is expected to be challenging, but is well supported.
