Overview

You will be supporting a young man in his mid 20’s with a diagnosis of autism, severe learning difficulties, delayed speech, slow processing and who, whilst able to do much for himself, needs gentle prompting. He communicates through a mix of Makaton, PECS and TEACCH systems. Communication failures can lead to challenging behaviours. He lives in his own home and your primary role will be to enable him to live as independent a life as possible, and access all activities in the community. His support is 2:1 daytime and 1:1 sleeping night shifts. At 6'1" he is a gentle giant who loves all sorts of activities. He has a support team of seven able men and women to provide the essential 24 hour support he needs to live as independent a life as possible, to help him develop life skills, and to engage in many and varied activities including attending church with him. You will not be just a 'PersonalAssistant' but will become a dependable 'friend’ aiding his development and supporting him with all that he does. Could you become a member of Team Fela? Team Members You must: Be able to work in the UK, and speak a good standard of English. Have experience in supporting people with at least one of the following, and preferably more: autism, severe learning difficulties or challenging behaviours. Fela communicates through his own modifications of the Makaton sign language, so ideally you must have some experience of supporting people who use a form of signing or be prepared to learn. Be fit enough to support him in a range of activities including walking, cycling, swimming, dancing. Daily exercise is a key aspect of his regimen. Have skills to support him with cooking, reading, household chores, laundry etc. Have a UK driving licence. Able to work in a team on a shift rota - all days, weekends, bank holidays etc. Have keyboard/computer skills to complete on-line reports. Have energy, empathy and willing to go the extra mile. The Rewards: We will be recruiting at hourly rates starting at £8.50/hour. Which will rise to £8.70 on satisfactory completion of your four-month probationary period, with more for excellent workers. You will work shift patterns, on all days of the week and on Public Holidays, as the shift plan requires. We are also looking for people who would be interested in part time work. Sleeping night shift, 9:15 pm to 9:15 am, is at your full hourly rate. Public Holidays are at time and a half, and 5.6 weeks paid holiday per year. We shall pay for your Enhanced DBS checks.
