About the trust A primary-age academy catering to children from the ages of four to eleven, Stramongate School has provided high quality educational opportunities for the children of Kendal for over 300 years. With c.40 members of staff, the trust currently has approximately 340 pupils on roll, with the potential to admit up to 60 children each year into Reception. The trust also provides on-site nursery provision with a nursery breakfast club, as well as ‘wrap-around’ care facilities for children in the main school. The recent Ofsted inspection has assessed the school as ‘Good’. Role summary Number of positions advertised: 3 Roles 1-3 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director or Member Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust. The core functions of their role are: ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; holding executive leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of a charitable company funded by the public purse. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust in compliance with its charitable objects, company and charity law. In the interests of safeguarding and in accordance with DfE requirements, all trustee appointments will be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check. The strategic expertise required for this role includes: Essential (due to multiple roles, candidates may be accepted who possess one or more of the skills below) HR Legal/ Compliance Finance Desirable Change Management Risk Growth management Succession Planning Business Growth Role 1 - HR : The ideal candidate will provide expertise in matters associated with Human Resources including organisational development recruitment, retention, succession planning and be able to guide the trust as it grows. Experience operating at least as the head of a functional area is essential, along with demonstrable experience of managing a budget at least in line with that of the trust. Role 2 - Legal/Compliance : The trust seeks an experienced professional with skills in the legal/compliance field. The ideal candidate will have a legal qualification, will help scrutinise the various aspects of compliance and provide broader understanding on the board of information given by its legal advisers when necessary. The suitable individual should have significant leadership experience and a proven track-record of strategic planning and/or oversight. They must be able to interpret data in all its forms and will have the ability to question and provide challenge. Role 3 – Finance : A finance specialist with an industry-recognised qualification, the ideal candidate will be capable of chairing the trust’s Finance and Audit & Risk committees. Potential candidates will be qualified and experienced accountants/auditors capable of offering support, scrutiny and challenge to the Trust Finance Manager and the executive leadership team. Time commitment Up to six hours per month, on average; nine meetings per year.
