Chief Financial Officer | £75,000 | Walsall, West Midlands | Education sector The Mercian Trust is a group of 6 Schools in the West Midlands working together under a common banner and an over-arching structure of governance, but retaining their autonomy as custodians of their unique heritage, distinct identity and successful operation. The Opportunity This is an exciting time for the Trust as we look to consolidate our commercial operations in a centralised structure that will provide consistency across all financial, corporate and governance related services, both from an internal and external perspective. With the pending retirement of our current CFO, we are seeking to hire an experienced and talented Senior Finance and Operations professional who can manage the Trust’s financial affairs and hold executive responsibility for general operations of the Trust. About the Chief Financial Officer Role Responsible to the Trust CEO, the CFO will ensure the financial sustainability of the Trust, that each individual school meets all financial legal requirements and monitor the financial performance of each individual academy and the Trust as a whole. Reporting to the Executive team and Trustees on this performance, you will lead, manage and develop staff within the finance team to support the Trust’s vision whilst promoting a strong customer service ethos and high professional standard across all academy sites. This is a post that will change over time and the CFO will be required to be reactive and proactive in the context of strategic priorities. As the CFO your remit will include, but not be restricted to: Leadership and Management - Lead the development and maintenance of appropriate reporting and control information that allows the Trustees, Executive Team, Academy Principals and other staff to make effective decisions on all financial matters. Leading, managing and developing staff within the finance team and promoting a strong customer service ethos and high professional standards. Operations - Work with the CEO and other senior leaders, on researching, installing and operating appropriate information systems and technologies across the Trust. Lead and manage the upkeep and development of the Trust’s property assets including major building work, planned upgrading of facilities and routine maintenance and cleaning Strategic - Contribute to the effective management of the MAT, including strategy implementation, cross-organisational issues, integrated business and resource planning, risk management and performance management. Budgeting and Budgetary control - Oversee the preparation of an annual draft budget plan for each Academy for consideration by the Trustees. Monitor expenditure and report to the CEO, Executive team and Trustees regarding progress against the approved budget, submitting reports on each Academy’s position to the Finance committee Audit - Maintain and resource an effective internal scrutiny / audit function. Advise Academies, Executive and Trustees on the results of internal audit procedures. Direct liaison with the sector regulator and appropriate monthly/annual reporting and submissions. Candidate Requirements To be successful in your application for this CFO position, you will: Be a qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/ACMA/CIPFA) with extensive post qualified experience Ideally have significant exposure in a Multi Academy Trust setting or in a multi-site organisation. Possess extensive experience of effective team management, implementing/updating finance systems, board level business partnering and financial reporting in a regulated sector setting.
