Overview
The Royal College of Art is ranked number one in the world for art and design by the QS World University Rankings and is the international voice of authority for the discipline. As the UK’s only entirely postgraduate art and design institution, the RCA develops interdisciplinary approaches to major societal challenges and provides unrivalled opportunities to deliver projects that transform the world. The RCA is leading the way in research into cities and migration; mobility; healthcare and wellbeing; and ageing populations. Alongside its commitment to the individual artist and maker, given its longstanding relationships with engineers and scientists, the RCA is championing the power of the creative arts (‘A’) in the STEAM agenda, alongside science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The RCA seeks an outstanding financially qualified professional to join the Council and the Audit & Risk Committee. This is a significant opportunity to play a role in the governance and strategic leadership of the RCA and to be involved in securing the RCA’s influential international position. As a charity, Members of Council serve as trustees with a legal fiduciary duty to ensure that the RCA’s affairs are conducted in an effective, prudent, and financially viable and sustainable manner. Alongside the skills and experience commensurate with holding a high profile non-executive position, candidates will ideally have a formal accountancy qualification such as FCA/FCCA and demonstrate: High ethical and professional standards and a strong commitment to the values and objectives of the RCA and to maintaining its inclusive and diverse ethos. Broad experience across financial strategy, audit, risk management, governance and reporting, and the ability to influence with tact and discretion. An understanding of the complexity of university governance and of the strategic, political and economic context in which the RCA operates. Deep expertise in strategic and operational risk and the experience to contribute to the scrutiny of risk assurance and internal control systems in a corporate governance context. Being a Council Member of the Royal College of Art is an interesting and stimulating role. In the spirit of charity trustees, Council Members are not remunerated, but may reclaim all reasonable travelling and similar expenses incurred in the course of RCA business. Appointments will be made for a three-year term, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term of three years. In exceptional circumstances, a Member may be reappointed for a final term of three years. Candidates must be able to dedicate time to a demanding and rewarding role, attending three meetings of the Audit & Risk Committee per year, in addition to four meetings of Council per year.
