Design Engineer
Overview
THE COMPANY: Brewster Partners are working with a Chesterfield manufacturing business as they look to recruit a Design Engineer. THE JOB: Purpose of the role: Facilitate internal and external mass-production of the Company product range by ensuring engineering drawings provided follow applicable standards and accurately reflect the design intent and requirements. Expand the Company product range by generating, validating and productionising new ideas. Support technical team with engineering advice, analysis and troubleshooting. Improve the Company product range for increased performance, reliability and reduced cost through redesign while ensuring the change minimises any adverse effects it may have on current business. Devise custom adaptations of current products to suit client requirements. Facilitate design/engineering projects which the company may undertake, maintaining relations with clients, agents, suppliers and liaising with different departments within the company as required. Objectives: Create and edit 3D components and assemblies in Solidworks following Drawing Office procedures and industry standards where applicable. Translate 3D models into 2D drawings with all the specifications necessary to accurately represent the design intent while following Drawing Office procedures and drafting standards where applicable; ensuring all the information on the drawings is correct and gives consideration to the manufacturing, installation and servicing processes. Ensure the bill of materials on drawings accurately reflects desired internal/supplier routing and internal part numbers and descriptors. Generate and rectifying additional client-friendly drawings and views for use in Company manuals as and when required by the technical team. Review and rectifying products upon request to bring in line with current model/drawing/BOM/production/purchasing requirements. Ensure design/review technique is adequately adapted to the required turnaround times to allow key deliverables to be finished in requested time or as soon as possible (i.e. 2D pdf version of drawings) with the remainder to be finished afterwards. If current procedures need to be bypassed or alternative design/review process implies significant drawing office post-release amendment work, or any work outside of the drawing office, managers of affected departments are to be notified prior to the work being done and advised of potential impacts. Ensure any changes to Company products currently on the market are adequately tracked and documented through Engineering Change Requests and Orders to capture the design approaches / tests conducted for any given change, whilst following the correct process. Ensure change implications are cleared with all people involved to minimise change impact. Ensure that any necessary project based paperwork, drawings, calculations etc. is always submitted in the correct fashion and within deadlines. Any delay must be communicated well in advance to allow realistic expectations and forecasting. Ensure prompt and accurate dissemination of information to any affected departments within the company when work is carried out on new/existing products. Respond to technical queries from within the company promptly and accurately. Perform engineering analysis as required during the design stages or for troubleshooting together with adequate associated documentation. Lead sourcing effort and perform prototype testing following company procedures as required. Must attempt to keep up to date with technology and standards. Must be able to provide support and guidance to other members of the drawing office with their role, be aware of their job function and how it is carried out and be able to deputise as necessary during holiday or sickness absence; this may include some engineering team members outside of the drawing office. If required, visit agents, customers and shipyards to provide support, guidance and troubleshooting. Visit and meet with suppliers as required for discussing product requirements during the design stages. Role may include both project and Company standard product work as well of oversight of drawing office team design engineers and project engineers. THE CANDIDATE: Experience required: Mechanical and hydraulic design. Knowledge of materials and engineering practices. Design for manufacture following industry design/draughting standards. Attention to detail. Working knowledge of the company product range. Consideration for how the business runs and awareness of possible design impacts. Knowledge of class requirements relating to MGPS, ICCP, Ballast Water and RO water makers. Proficient - Solidworks suite including Flow Simulation, Simulation and ePDM. Proficient - Microsoft Office suite, specifically Outlook, Excel, Word. Time management skills. Qualifications Required Minimum of Bachelor's degree in subject related to Mechanical Engineering.
