Product Development Chemist Position: Full-time, permanent Location: Warrington Reports to: Managing Director Hours: Mon-Fri – 8am – 4pm Salary: £23,000 - £27,000 per year depending on experience, plus £2,000 annual Attendance Bonus (Terms and Conditions apply) About us: We provide bespoke outsourced chemical manufacturing and repackaging services to the UK & European chemical supply chain with a focus on delivering an unrivalled service. Job Purpose Reporting to the Managing Director you will be working on several agreed projects and working with our QC Technicians in coordinating and maintaining the daily running of the laboratory. One of the main aspects of the role will be to improve or develop the existing product / service range and create ‘new’ ones. Additionally, you will be supporting the sales team in answering technical questions relating to our capabilities and or product performance and assist in product costing, regulatory support and the production of product promotional marketing content. Essential Duties & Responsibilities The role will have no direct staff responsibility; however, it is anticipated that this role will naturally develop to a more senior position for the right person. Product and Process Development You will have the responsibility to develop an agreed range of product(s) from laboratory through to marketplace to complement or improve the company’s current product range. You will be visiting customers to ensure these new or improved products are an improvement and reporting back to the Managing Director with the results. You will be technically supporting the customer facing teams and be responsible for providing technical training and support for all functions across the business. Laboratory Management You will be working with other laboratory and technical staff to deal with the workload demands in the laboratory and liaising with the Managing Director if necessary. You will be supervising the routine chemical analysis within the Quality Management Systems and implement improvements where necessary. You will be responsible for the documenting and upkeep of laboratory reporting procedures and methods of analysis. Health Safety and Environmental Management You will ensure product labelling comply with CLP and REACH regulations and the upkeep and creation of compliant safety data sheets. Ensuring the standard operating procedures are fit for purpose, adhered to and meet the requirements of the Quality Management System. Implement and continually improve safe systems of work to ensure regulatory compliance and safety. Training, staff development and Performance You will provide input to laboratory staff training, welfare, safety and development to ensure optimal performance. You will be contributing to and maintaining the company Training Matrix, training needs and training plan, providing for training requirements and maintaining training records to ensure laboratory staff are adequately trained for efficient running of the laboratory. Person Specification: Essential The applicant holds a recognised 1st or upper 2nd degree or PhD or Masters in Chemistry or equivalent. Experience of working within a quality management system Experienced in managing laboratory health, safety and environmental compliance Good Level of IT literacy including Microsoft Office packages and databases Resourceful, entrepreneurial, problem-solving skills, proactive and ‘can do’ attitude Confident communicator Excellent time management, organisational and interpersonal skills Meticulous attention to detail Not afraid to challenge us on our thinking and assist us in our quest for improvement and our drive for business growth A professional and friendly telephone manner and the ability to work to deadlines Honest, friendly, approachable and good team member Desirable Experience of research and development and of managing a small laboratory Experience of industrial formulation chemistry Experienced in a wide range of techniques inclusive of wet analytical chemistry and use of HPLC analysis.
