Overview
Working in a holistic way as part of a team, enabling and motivating service users to explore, identify and achieve their goals to move towards their mental health recovery, encourage service users to take greater control of their lives and instil hope and belief that mental health recovery is possible. The Staff Nurse will be expected to carry out their duties taking full account of the company’s objectives to provide an environment where service users are encouraged to believe in their recovery, where power is given to services users and staff work to support service users to achieve their goals, ensuring that their choices are maximised. Support provided to service users will include nursing and social care support and mental health recovery support as appropriate to each individual residing at the Recovery Centre. The Staff Nurse will provide nursing care to a high standard in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and in accordance with the unit monitoring and evaluation procedures as directed by the Manager. The Staff Nurse requires to be familiar with the SSSC code of practice to ensure that Support Workers are adhering and working to their professional standards also, particularly when working in the role of Shift Co-ordinator. The Staff Nurse will carry out assessments relevant to each individual such as GASS for example , support the planning of individual support for service users through using person centred planning tools to set goals, implement steps towards that and review as agreed with service users. The Staff Nurse will ensure that methods of working contribute to the success of these plans. This will include utilising services of others and linking to outside agencies, e.g. drop-in centres, colleges and community resources as the individual support plan indicates. Where a multi- disciplinary approach is adopted communication must be to a good standard and adhere to Data Protection and the NMC and SSSC codes as well as Birchwood Highland policies. The individual’s support plans will be revisited and reviewed regularly as agreed with the service users. The Staff Nurse will ensure that service user’s support plans are reviewed with them, initially after 6 weeks, thereafter at least 6 monthly. Good recording keeping must be adhered to as outlined by the NMC and Birchwood Highland policies. Carrying out all relevant forms of care and support and designated to take charge as Shift Co-ordinator whenever the rota dictates. Supervising junior staff and teaching other staff within the team, including basic and or post-basic students. Becoming a recognised mentor through the University of Stirling is encouraged to provide support to nursing students. Taking responsibility as shift co-ordinator as required. Ensuring that every service users is allocated staff time to meet their needs. The shift co-ordinator will ensure that all staff on shift accurately record the outcomes of the shift plan for the day detailing what they will do for service users allocated during that shift. To apply a holistic person centred approach to care, maximising the choice, responsibility and well being of individual service users. To support service users receiving pharmacological interventions, including medication management. To provide support to service users when moving towards self-management of their own medication. To be involved as directed in the regular auditing of standards of support and care. To encourage and facilitate service users involvement in decisions about the running of Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre. To support service users in the practicality of day-to-day living skills in maintaining and building social skills, and creating opportunities for each individual wherever possible in close collaboration with them. To provide opportunities to enable service users to enjoy occupational and leisure activities, utilising supported work placements and other employment opportunities. To ensure that Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre policies and procedures are adhered to, and contributing to the review of them. To be conversant with legislation concerning mental health issues. To maintain the management of Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre, consistent with the principles of the Manager, utilising nursing resource within agreed availability. To maintain good lines of communication at all times: Read and record written communications, e.g. minutes of all meetings, allocations sheet and all other relevant documentation. Shift handovers Care Team and Birchwood Highland Recovery Centre Management meetings Meetings with colleagues Multi-disciplinary meetings Regular internal reviews To maintain the efficient use at all times of all resources, ensuring that monitoring systems are implemented. To work flexibly where changing circumstances dictate during a shift to meet the needs of the service. To support the induction programmes for all new members of staff. To ensure that all relevant policies and procedures are adhered to including those of Birchwood Highland and applicable professional governing bodies such as the NMC and SSSC. To stand in or act up for line manager as required. To maintain equipment as required and at all times to ensure compliance with the relevant governing legislation. To ensure that a stimulating learning environment for all staff, residents and relatives is maintained. To increase awareness of Health Promotion, Harm Reduction and participate in appropriate Health Education programmes. To participate in the setting and monitoring of social and nursing care standards and to ensure that National Care Standards are met at all times. To develop and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base, participating in identifying own training needs and attending courses as appropriate to maintain revalidation. To participate in the evaluation of nursing initiatives using research-based techniques. To act as good professional role models to meet the needs of students when on placement. To contribute to the assessment process for nursing students whether recognised mentors or not. CRITICAL COMPETENCIES The post holder must have excellent communications skills, including a good knowledge of what constitutes good nursing provision, as well as the ability to motivate others. QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE RMN OR RMN/RGN The list of duties is not intended to be exhaustive but highlights a number of the major tasks of the post. SUMMARY OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS The appointment is subject to a six-month probationary period with an initial three month review. Holiday entitlement is twenty two days per annum with ten days public holidays. Staff will be paid monthly. The post holder will hold a current and satisfactory PVG scheme membership or will secure this prior to commencement in post. This post is subject to two satisfactory references.
