Overview

Engineering Technical Specialists You will have the opportunity to work on one of a variety of our programmes and projects, helping us to design, develop, integrate, manage and support complex systems and combat sub-systems for in‑service and future submarines. You will understand and have experience of applying good system engineering practices in your work and in addition as a technical specialist in one of the key product areas you will have a good understanding of the user needs, and how the principles of the science and technology will influence and impact design and operational performance. Areas of specialisation include sonar, communications, command & control, radar and optronic. Your levels of responsibility will depend on your skills and experience, but you will be able to understand and report the programme status for engineering activities in your area of responsibility, identify problem areas and implement recovery plans, helping us to support our submarines that play a critical role in our nation's defence. Your main responsibilities as a Technical Specialist will involve: Understanding and interpreting the User Needs and Concept of Operations (CONOPS) for the combat system or products and be able to derive the technical and functional requirements. Applying your specialist domain knowledge to ensure that systems are designed, built, integrated and accepted into service correctly, safely and securely. This may include working with suppliers and the military users of our equipment. Providing technical guidance and support to other engineering teams during the submarine design, build and system installation and integration activities. You will have or develop an understanding of the customer Operational Defect (OPDEF) and maintenance processes to be able to provide specialist advice as required. Using your knowledge of current and potential future potential technologies in the marketplace to understand and be able to provide advice on the implications for sub-system design in a submarine. Your skills and qualifications: Essential: Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science). Knowledge of the system engineering lifecycle and be able to apply good systems engineering practices to your work Understanding of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations Desirable: Use of system analysis and design tools such as Enterprise Architect. Experience of working in a customer-facing and/or supplier engagement role. Member of appropriate professional institution; Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership.
