Principal Engineer - Support Engineering (In Service Design)
Overview
Principal Engineer - Support Engineering (In-Service Design Change) You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of our programmes and projects, helping us to design, develop, integrate, manage and support complex systems and sub-systems for in‑service and future submarines. You will work within a team of other engineers and technical specialists to understand and influence the inputs, flow of decisions and dependencies that will impact system design and product delivery. You will be responsible for the day-to-day identification and appropriate resolution of technical issues throughout the product lifecycle, helping us to support our submarines that play a critical role in our nation's defence. Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer - Support Engineering (In-Service Design Change) will involve: Delivering a proactive and agile technical response service to the User and other key stakeholders in order to maintain the operational capability of in-service submarines. You will be able to apply your subject matter expertise and domain experience of good engineering practices, to ensure that any work carried out meets the relevant maritime legislation, industry and defence standards. You will have an understanding of how these will influence and impact design activities, technical and operational performance. As a Principal Engineer - Support Engineering (In-Service Design Change), you will evaluate, execute and manage complex engineering and/ or cross functional tasks or programmes of work whilst recognising stakeholder and customer requirements. You will identify and implement opportunities for personal and team development to ensure that the professional capability of the business and individuals are maintained and improved. The following activities are typical of work that may be carried out by the Principal Engineer - Support Engineering (In-Service Design Change), in full or in part, dependent on the position of the project in the engineering lifecycle; Produce technical guidance documentation for In-Service Submarine Alterations and Additions (A&A), Class Modifications (CM) and Minor trials (MT), ensuring adherence to all aspects of the MOD In-Service Submarines Design Change process KP 2.31. Conduct the review of technical design change information/ proposals and feedback findings to both internal and external stakeholders, making recommendations for change where required. Conduct design change Safety Assessment documentation reviews and, where required, input into Safety Assessment and HAZID workshops for both In-Service and In-Build Submarines. Review/ Interrogate daily platform Operational Defect (OPDEF) reports and attend, on behalf of the Engineering Manager, the In-Service Submarine daily technical issues meeting, sharing experience and knowledge as required and ensuring adequate feedback is presented to the team of any safety-critical or other emergent issues. Organise and chair internal and external customer meetings on behalf of the Engineering Manager. Provide input to training courses as required in order to support learning from experience from events, drive continuous improvement and promote a positive safety and quality culture. Conduct trend analysis of incidents, events and the findings from completed investigations in order to identify themes and trends to inform the business and drive continuous improvement. To be fully conversant with the Quality and SHE Management systems, and specifically, with processes and risk assessments associated with your particular function. Support the identification, implementation and delivery of learning opportunities to the business from Operational Experience captured from both internal and external sources. To be fully conversant with ITAR and associated import and export restrictions. Use of Business/ MoD Computer Systems software as required. Your skills and qualifications: Essential: Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science). Capable of working towards professional registration (CEng) through a recognised engineering institution such as the IET or IMechE. Understanding of the system engineering lifecycle and be able to apply good systems engineering practices to your work. Recognition of the need to apply relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations. The ability to communicate to all levels within the business and with external stakeholders. Competent with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel. Desirable: Knowledge and understanding of Royal Navy Submarine operation (ideally the Astute Class at Whole Boat and Major System level). Understanding of Enterprise Change Requests and Design Change Management Processes. Knowledge of Computer Aided Design packages, for example Solidworks or CADDS. Knowledge of the engineering lifecycle with some experience of operating in the phase relevant to the role. Knowledge of relevant engineering standards, including safety and environmental regulations. Conversant with the MOD In-Service Submarines Design Change process KP 2.31.
