Seasonal horticulture/plant Assistants East Malling April -September 2020 £15,796 - £16,777 per annum My client is looking to recruit Seasonal Assistants, to work in the Genetics, Genomics and Breeding department to contribute to a strawberry breeding programme. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in horticulture research while developing professional skills in team working, time management and practical problem solving. Main job activities To help to operate a glasshouse facility and be responsible for irrigation management and environmental control To carry out general glasshouse husbandry including regular monitoring for pest and disease and the application of biological control To maintain a collection of germplasm and carry out plant husbandry duties such as propagation, potting and cleaning of material To assist with fruit assessment, data collation and carrying out accurate fruit analytical measurements To input data in to databases and spreadsheets diligently and check for errors To work in accordance with Safety Objectives, comply with Quality Assurance requirements and contribute to corporate responsibilities Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in horticulture/plant sciences and be willing to learn, full training will be given. A good eye for detail is also essential, along with the ability to follow protocols and standard operating procedures. The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic individual with good organisational and time management skills, able to work independently as well as within a team. The work will entail spending the majority of the period working in a glasshouse environment, but may also involve working outdoors in the open field or under polythene tunnels. During the summer months, air temperature in the glasshouse or polytunnel can exceed 30°C and the appointee should be prepared to work for 1-2 hours at a time under these conditions. The work also involves working in an integrated pest management environment which includes the use of bumble bees for pollination, The roles are based at East Malling but travelling to on-site trials will be required. Previous experience in horticulture work is desirable as is a full driving license and the willingness to work flexible hours.
