Overview

Mechanic - The Lizard Lifeboat Station Helston, Cornwall From £30,978 per annum Plus Benefits There is a unique opportunity at the Lizard Lifeboat Station for someone whose leadership and interpersonal skills are just as strong as their ability to operate and maintain a boat and its equipment. Our full-time Mechanics contribute to the operational effectiveness of the station through the operation, maintenance and repair of associated machinery and equipment. As such, a large amount of your working day will involve ensuring the lifeboat and equipment work to the highest order. As there is always a high degree of interest from the public, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet them and talk about your work. You should have experience of maintaining high-speed diesel engines and the associated electrical and electronic systems of fast, modern boats of up to 20 metres in length. Successful completion of a marine or commercial engineering apprenticeship or experience of working within marine and mechanical environments would be desirable, but not essential. You will need to be computer literate and willing to learn new systems as demanded by this exciting, developing role. As your experience in the Mechanic role increases, there will be an expectation that your future development includes the role of an ALB Coxswain. You will be part of an engaging team at the Lizard Lifeboat Station, assisting in the delivery of community events and working with internal RNLI partners and wider external organisations to further our work on reducing preventable loss of life on the water. Your excellent communication skills will be key to developing great relationships with all those you work with. You will also be a key member of the team when the lifeboat is at sea. As this is a seagoing appointment, you will be required to be on call 24 hours per day, weekdays and weekends, with agreed permitted weekend and annual leave being planned in advance with your deputies. In order to meet call-out response criteria, this appointment is subject to satisfying medical and eyesight requirements and has associated conditions of service. The RNLI is committed to safeguarding; ensuring the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk. We expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role. (England & Wales; DBS check, Scotland; Disclosure Scotland PVG, Northern Ireland; Access NI, Republic of Ireland; Garda Vetting). We are an equal opportunities employer. The closing date for applications is the 5th April 2020.
