Overview

About The Role We are currently seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) working in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The Huntercombe Hospital Maidenhead, located in Taplow 4 miles from Maidenhead and 1 mile from junction 7 of the M4 motorway. The hospital is a 60 bedded Tier 4 CAMHS hospital for young people aged 12 -18 years with a range of mental health disorders and includes the following units: • A General Adolescent Unit (GAU) • Two Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) • An Eating Disorder Unit (EDU) We provide comprehensive assessment and treatment programmes working collaboratively with young people and their families or carers. This role is dedicated to providing high quality clinical care for young people using the services of the hospital. The post holder will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that young people are offered a person-centred and evidence-based treatment programme. The post holder will be the clinical lead for a full multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will work on one of our two psychiatric intensive care units (PICUs). They will be expected to contribute to the development of the service in line with the changing commissioning and commercial pressures of the sector. CLINICAL DUTIES • To hold and chair weekly young person review meetings (ward rounds). • Review each of the young people at least weekly and that these assessments are documented. • It is an expectation that any new admissions to the post holder’s ward be assessed by the post holder within 24 hours of admission and this assessment documented (not including weekends or when on annual leave). • The post holder will be expected to take overall responsibility for the care of all the young people on their unit. • Attend (and at times chair) morning ward meetings to address any new or emerging risks, incidents and safeguarding matters. • The post holder is required to be in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for continuing professional development (CPD). • To take part in a second on-call rota (telephone support only) shared with other Child and Adolescent Consultants across the Huntercombe CAMHS division. The frequency of this rota is 1:7 (taken in blocks of continuous days, no more than 7 consecutively) and the workload is very light (e.g. taking the occasional call from a specialty grade doctor or conducting an out of hours gatekeeping assessment on paper), such that days in lieu are not required. QUALITY/ CLINICAL LEADERSHIP • Offering a holistic view to the multidisciplinary team in relation to the assessment, formulation and treatment of young people. • Taking clinical responsibility for patients including multidisciplinary ward rounds, risk reviews, strategic reviews and the development of a therapeutic milieu. • Fulfilling the role of Responsible Clinician to young people detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007). Medically responsible under the Mental Health Act for the medical treatment of all of the young people on their ward. • Supervising the process of referrals and admissions, both routine and emergency, including preadmission assessment with other team members within the multi-agency team, primarily the Ward Manager. • Contributing to management meetings and clinical governance meetings for the services provided at the hospital and contributing to the development of service strategy. • Contributing to in-house training programmes within the service and offering supervision to other members of the multi-disciplinary team, particularly junior staff. • Be the primary, focal role in the case management of the young people in relation to the referring community CAMHS, adult mental health (when appropriate), local authority and commissioning agencies. This responsibility will apply to all localities within the UK. The post holder will be expected to carefully manage admissions and discharges from the unit. CLINICAL GOVERNANCE/ INNOVATION • Contributing to the development and evaluation of services in collaboration with the senior management team. • The post holder will be expected to take part in and supervise medically related audits and present these to the audit meeting and Clinical Governance. • The post holder will be expected to lead the clinical team effectively, direct treatment, liaise with referrers, commissioners and all external agencies relating to the young person’s care. • The post holder will be expected to manage team functioning and intervene appropriately and with appropriate consultation if there are team disputes. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE • Maintaining CPD and revalidation requirements as determined by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the General Medical Council. • The post holder is required to be an approved clinician under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007). • To be a good team player and keen to participate in a multidisciplinary approach to assessment, formulation and management plans. • The post holder must be on the specialist register and have sufficient experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to be confident in discharging their clinical responsibilities to the young people on their ward.
