Overview

Principal Mechanical Engineer Would you like an exciting and diverse engineering role within our Site & Facilities Engineering department? We currently have a number of opportunities for Principal Mechanical Engineers at our submarines site in Barrow-In-Furness. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be working across a range of site equipment, facilities and infrastructure to support the build of submarines for the Royal Navy. You will be responsible for affording assurance that engineering designs for site and facilities equipment and installations comply with relevant standards, statutory regulations and safety requirements. Specific tasks include giving technical advice, identification of technical requirements, providing technical solutions, review of designs, writing technical reports, conducting investigations and carrying out audits of installations/documentation. This post will provide support to a variety of engineering projects and facilities which will involve engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, departments and external contractors. It also allows for development where necessary. If you do not meet the criteria for Principal Engineer level, you may be considered for a lower grade. Your main responsibilities as a Principal Mechanical Engineer will involve: Ensuring that all new or modified assets are compliant with relevant current standards for intended use and meet stakeholder requirements Ensuring that nuclear related assets on the Barrow site are justified to meet the requirements of the Nuclear Site Licence Establishing and agreeing stakeholder requirements (and if applicable Nuclear Safety Functional Requirements) for facilities and equipment Production of reports, technical specifications and Statement of Requirements documents Providing advice to other disciplines, maintainers and site committees on technical issues and requirements to meet nuclear, HS&E and other relevant legislation Review of design proposals for both new assets and for major modifications Assisting in the project management of installations and commissioning of new and modified assets where discipline knowledge is required Production of special operating procedures and documentation Managing consultants and contractors who supply specialist analysis and design services or installations Amending design substantiation reports and producing safety justification documentation to support the safety case for nuclear related site facilities and equipment and obtaining authorisation through due process Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Mechanical Engineer: Essential: Qualified to degree level or equivalent (i.e. HNC with engineering experience) in a Mechanical Engineering discipline Experience in a technical/engineering role Demonstrable experience of working within a complex engineering environment and familiarity with commercial standards Desirable Experience within a Nuclear Environment to relevant ONR License Conditions or similar highly regulated business Professional registration or Chartered Engineer status What we're looking for in you: You must be resilient, whilst possessing excellent influencing skills and be able to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Communication skills, both written and verbal, will be key in this role to be able to articulate technical information to a range of audiences.
