Overview

Senior Standards Analyst Based from London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and/or Belfast £Competitive Team Overview Ofcom is the independent regulator for the UK communications industries. We regulate the TV, radio, telecoms and postal sectors, plus the radio spectrum which enables wireless devices to operate. As the technology people use to watch and listen to content continues to evolve, we also need to address the future of content regulation across different platforms. The Standards and Audience Protection team is responsible for defining and enforcing content standards to ensure that audiences are protected. Purpose of the Role We are looking for several individuals (at varying levels of seniority) with excellent research and analysis skills to work as part of a team which will provide cultural, political and religious research to inform our consideration of programmes broadcast on TV, radio and on demand. Requirements of the Role - Oversee and produce concise, accurate and well sourced briefings to senior colleagues on cultural, political and religious issues which will be used as an evidence base for our work. - Oversee and produce accurate, written summaries of content, which identify potential issues that Ofcom may wish to investigate. - Draft relevant parts of complex decisions, contributing the political, cultural and/or religious reasoning and analysis required. - Identify and escalate potentially difficult or sensitive issues and prioritise effectively. - Oversee and produce accurate, written word-for-word translations from Urdu and/or Hindi into English, of content broadcast in programmes on TV, radio and on demand. - Contribute to our ongoing policy work around Section Three of the Broadcasting Code. - Develop knowledge of the Broadcasting Code, relevant procedures and precedent cases. - Leadership, strategy and team development (for senior roles). Skills, knowledge and experience - In-depth knowledge of South East Asian and/or Middle Eastern politics and culture (this could be from living and working in one of these regions, through study, or any other way). - A forensic, analytical approach to research, with demonstrable experience of research either for study or in a previous role. - Highly analytical, and able to assimilate complex issues quickly, demonstrating command of detail and the bigger picture. - Strong writing skills, and the ability to ensure the quality and timeliness of your own and others’ written material. - Fluency (both spoken and written) in English, Urdu and/or Punjabi, and the ability to translate content accurately into English from Urdu and/or Punjabi.
