Overview End Date - 13/04/2020 Salary - competitive The Corporate Tax department provides bespoke taxation services to its clients and deals with all queries from basic compliance through to high-level advisory work. It prepares tax returns and computations, carries out tax planning/consultancy work, and deals with HMRC, clients and third parties. The firm's specialist Innovation & Technology Group, based in the London, at the Baker Street office, comprises engineers, software programmers and scientists as well as specialist finance professionals such as auditors and tax accountants all of whom are experienced in claiming R&D tax relief. The Innovation and Technology team provide the following services: Claiming R&D tax relief R&D Allowances (RDAs) Grants Patent Box International R&D relief This is a client facing role where the consultant will be working with customers from a wide range of industry sectors undertaking development activities within the field of Software Engineering. A key aspect for this role will be the ability to translate complex ideas into non-technical concepts and communicate these to a broad client base. Responsibilities Undertaking the technical assessment of claims and producing the technical summary commensurate to the size of the client Writing detailed technical reports for appropriate authorities (typically HMRC), based on interviews. Identification of qualifying R&D projects and expenditure through participation in technical discussions with clients Undertaking the financial assessment of claims and producing the financial calculations (SME and Large) Review company structures to determine the relevant R&D scheme Liaison with our technical tax staff on the preparation of tax documents comprising these R&D claims for submission of claims to HMRC Work with client’s finance and tax teams to ensure that eligible R&D Tax expenditure is identified. Project manage R&D tax claims (i.e. continuously liaising with clients, colleagues and key contacts at HMRC to ensure claims are optimised and deadlines are met) First point of contact with clients Liaison with HMRC to follow up on outstanding claims Supporting R&D Tax Relief claims in the event of HMRC R&D enquiries Actively developing and promoting both internally and externally the BDO R&D tax offering Attending meetings, building and developing effective working relationships with colleagues, intermediaries and other networks to develop further opportunities and business over time Continuously developing own knowledge and skills and to keep technical knowledge up to date Representing the Firm at seminars and computer sciences related events Requirements At least 2 years’ experience including R&D and Corporation Tax - Software A holder of a recognised Computer Sciences university degree (MSc and / or PhD). This in combination with a business degree would be an advantage Ideally, some experience in software development and programming in two or more of the following: SQL, Oracle, X10,.NET CLR, JVM, JavaScript, C#, XML, HTML, PHP, Solaris, Redhat Ideally proven experience of working on several software projects and experienced in working within a business unit with internal (and external) clients Excellent communication (both spoken and written) Understanding accounts and tax computations for the purposes of understanding the benefit to the client Understanding requirements of the relevant local tax legislation and guidelines Strong numerical ability Strong project management skills to ensure R&D claims are delivered to time and within budget.
