***Internal Applicants Only*** Department The Department of History at Essex offers research-led and innovative teaching in a friendly atmosphere. We explore the history of people and cultures spanning Britain, Europe and the globe with a comparative, interdisciplinary approach. The Department is supported by a team of administrators, led by the Department Manager and the Deputy Department Manager. Duties of the Role The Department Manager provides leadership for the Professional Services Team in the Department so that it is able to make a full contribution to delivering the excellence in education and research that is the University's purpose. The role has a focus on staff management and strategic planning, and requires gaining knowledge and expertise of University regulations, policies and practices. The main duties include leading the Professional Services Team and providing support to the Head of Department mainly in relation to strategic planning, human resource management and financial planning. Duties include compliance and quality assurance and responsibility for reviewing and monitoring administrative procedures and systems within the Department. The role also involves acting as an interface with other sections of the University and representing departmental interests at University Committees and Working Groups. A full list of responsibilities and duties can be found within the job pack. Skills and qualifications required The role is varied and wide ranging. The successful candidate will possess a 2:1 degree or equivalent qualification / professional experience. In addition, you will have proven, extensive and high level administrative experience coupled with experience of staff management. You will be expected to demonstrate leadership, financial management, organisational and administrative, and practical IT skills. Flexibility, excellent interpersonal and communication skills combined with the ability to deal effectively with competing priorities and deadlines are also essential for this post.
