Job Description
We currently have a great opportunity for an Animal Technician to join the busy multi-disciplined Biological Services Division, within our National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) centre. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research. The agency is made up of c.1300 staff working across three centres: Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency regulatory centre (MHRA) Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) National Institute for Biological Standards and Controls (NIBSC) NIBSC is a global leader in the characterisation, standardisation and control of biological medicines. NIBSC plays a major role in assuring the quality of biological medicines worldwide through the provision of biological reference materials, by testing products and carrying out research. Our expert scientists also provide advice on a routine basis and in response to emergencies. A member of the Technical Team working within the busy multi-disciplined Biological Services Division (BSD), which houses a range of laboratory animal species: to contribute to the in-vivo support service to NIBSC scientific Divisions which is necessary for compliance with the Institute's activities for vaccine control, batch release, standards, and research and development. All work done is compliant with the requirements of the relevant UK and EU legislation on the use of animal in research. All work is also reviewed by the local Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB). Key responsibilities: Care and welfare of a variety of animal species, including non-human primates (NHPs): ensuring all animals are cared for and maintained to the highest standards of health and welfare. This will mainly be work at Biological Containment Level (CL) 2, but may also include work at CL3, with appropriate training. Responsible for specified animal holding rooms and the daily care of the animals within, including provision of food/water, cleaning of cages, room hygiene routines and restock of materials. Safe handling of animals. Performing health checks/formal observations on animals. Performing minor veterinary treatments for sick or injured animals under advice from Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) or Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS). Contributing to environmental enrichment initiatives for the animals. Preparing animals for licensed procedures. Precision loading of syringes with specified inoculation samples. Performing dissections and tissue sampling. The successful candidate will: Hold 5 GCSE (or equivalent) passes, including a biological subject and/or IAT minimum level professional qualification or equivalent (NVQ, BTEC etc.) would be desirable. Demonstrate good IT skills: familiar with MS Office (Word/Excel) and other common applications such as databases and document control systems. Apply high level of attention to detail in day-to-day working situations is observant and responsive to developing situations. Apply high degree of self-organization in day-to-day working situations demonstrates ability to prioritize, work to deadlines, and make best use of time. Display practical experience of caring for animals in some capacity within a working environment (research, veterinary practice, stables, kennels, zoo etc.), including daily husbandry, handling and restraint, dealing with sick animals and evidence of a commitment to high standards of animal welfare.
