Job Description
We are looking to appoint an Trainee band 6 nurse practitioner within our trauma and orthopaedics department at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). Successful applicants will have an education pathway matched to their development needs and will be required to undertake either a L7 (MSc) apprenticeship in Advanced Clinical Practice via Bournemouth University or via a L7 modular approach at Southampton University. For several years now, Trauma and orthopaedics has recruited a team of proactive, committed and dynamic practitioners who have developed the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioners into a well-defined, structured and respected career pathway at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). We are now seeking to expand our team further within the field of trauma and orthopaedics to enable a 24/7 service; benefiting our patients in terms of continuity and quality of care, prompt admissions, enhanced inpatient care and discharges, improving patient experience and reducing length of stay. ABOUT THE TEAM The trauma and orthopaedic unit is a 126 bedded unit, comprising of a major trauma ward, elective surgery ward, two trauma wards, orthopaedic step down unit and dedicated trauma assessment unit. This provides the opportunity to experience a wide variety of trauma and orthopaedic conditions and gain variable experience with both acutely unwell patients and assessment of admissions. WHAT YOU'LL DO * To work as an independent practitioner under the supervision of the Senior Nurse Practitioner / Advanced Nurse Practitioner or designated Medical Practitioner (DMP * This role involves undertaking competency based patient assessment and examination in order to formulate a management plan for specific groups of patients admitted to UHS for diagnosis and / or treatments. * The Nurse Practitioner is expected to undertake all preparatory work prior to the patient undergoing treatment or diagnosis which may include consent, request of any further investigations and to highlight any potential complications to the advanced nurse practitioner or relevant medical colleague. * As a Trainee Advanced Practitioner you are expected to work in conjunction with the 4 pillars of advanced practice (HEE Framework Oct 2017, HEW Framework Oct 2016) * Expert clinical practice * Leadership and management, in order to improve and transform services. * Research - application of existing research and contributing to new research within chosen speciality. * Education and development of self and others. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR You will have extensive post registration experience in trauma and orthopaedic nursing although acute medical or surgical experience will be considered, with an appropriate history taking and physical examination course. There will be the opportunity to complete an MSc advanced practice pathway under the support and guidance of our medical colleagues. With the support of the team and medical colleagues you will have the opportunity to become an expert practitioner within the field of trauma and orthopaedic care. Enabling you to become an autonomous clinician within the multidisciplinary team, offering support to both nursing and junior medical colleagues. You are required to have completed all senior band 5 competencies and be able to provide evidence of post registration CPD and degree / MSc level study. You must be flexible and able to work within a small team with high demands on workload, energetic and forward thinking, as well as eager to develop clinical and leadership skills.
