Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our Biochemistry team in the Blood Sciences department. Blood Sciences at Broomfield Hospital is a friendly department that incorporates Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion, Haematology, Immunology and Sample Reception. The department provides analytical services for the Mid Essex Trust, St Andrews Burns Unit and other NHS & non-NHS providers. Biochemistry also provides the Maternal Serum Screening service for the area. The department is currently equipped with Beckman Coulter AU5800 and DXI analysers which are on a fully automated tracked system, Roche E411 equipment and WinPath as the laboratory computer system in use. The department has a special chemistry section consisting of HPLC, specialist protein analysis, free light chain assays and regional Downs screening service. The department also provides a Point of Care Testing service to the Trust and surrounding areas. The department is fully UKAS ISO15189 accredited. For a Band5 position, eligibility for HCPC-registration is essential with the specialist portfolio and/or a relevant MSc or equivalent. For a Band 5 position, eligibility for HCPC-registration is essential and preference will be given to those who completed their Registration in a Biochemistry laboratory. For a Trainee position, an IBMS-accredited degree in Biomedical Science is essential. There is a strong training ethos in the department and we have a full-time training Lead in post across Blood Sciences to support development needs. The department regularly hold lunchtime seminars. You must be keen to develop your knowledge and skills. Following an appropriate period of training, the post-holder will be required to undertake flexible working which will include participation in extended hours and the out-of-hours service. The out-of-hours service is currently an on-call system, this will be reviewed in line with national guidance and local requirements in the future. The post-holder will be required to obtain and maintain competency in all relevant areas of the laboratory.
