Job Description
Mill Farm Stud Mill Farm is a stud that breeds thoroughbred racehorses for both flat and jump racing. The stud also manages the preparation of foals through to 3 year olds for sale. Mill Farm's main objective is to maintain high standards of care for all of its animals onsite. Key Responsibilities * To work effectively with managers and decision makers to ensure the animals on site are cared for correctly to the highest standards. This would involve the individual to carry out all horse husbandry tasks that are associated with the rearing and caring of stock including: Grooming and clipping Turning out and bringing in (including foals and youngsters) Mucking out Feeding Cleaning tack and equipment Holding stock for the vet, farrier or other Travelling with the horses in the horsebox * To assist with the preparation of stock to go to the sale when required * Assisting with foaling mares may be required * Other general maintenance and tidying duties; this can include washing field water buckets/troughs and keeping work areas clean (including the yard). Poo picking and paddock maintenance tasks. * Note taking for stud records as required and alerting the manager/supervisor on shift to any potential problems with the animals. Knowledge and Experience * Previous experience of working with racehorses or thoroughbred young stock is ideal; however a good background with competition horses/stud work will be accepted. A foundation degree or NVQ in horse management is helpful but not essential * The individual should be competent to handle mares, foals, yearlings and any other stock on the farm * Knowledge of veterinary aspects of horse care, such as knowing when to call a veterinarian out whilst working alone is vital * Knowledge of the process from foal to racehorse is preferred but training can be given. * Knowledge of working as part of a team is essential as well as a good attitude at working with professional contractors - for example, veterinarians. * Experience in note taking is ideal as during the season up to date records are vital with the mares and young stock The ideal candidate will: Be sympathetic and understanding to each individual horse. The candidate will handle horses in a positive and caring manner Be able to work well as part of a small friendly team and have a good attitude Be flexible and will work willingly at weekends when required Have excellent accuracy and attention to detail when working on the horses and around the farm Have the ability to work to deadlines, manage and organise their own time and work unsupervised to a high standard Have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate with all levels of the organisation Be confident to work with company managers, directors and decision makers Be willing to learn (you may be required to take external distance learning or internal training courses)
