RESEARCH FELLOW IN MACHINE LEARNING - 57909 Position Details Area: School of Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range 30,942 to 40,322 with potential progression once in post to 42,792 Grade/Band: Grade 7 Hours: Full time Duration: Fixed-term for up to 18 months Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK Closing Date: 19 June 2020 Background To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the EPSRC Fellowship project " FORGING: Fortuitous Geometries and Compressive Learning ". The project is based in the School of Computer Science. It aims to deepen the theoretical and methodological foundations statistical machine learning in high dimensional settings. Summary of Role Work within specified research grants and projects Operate within area of specialism Analyse and interpret research findings and results Contribute to research publications Contribute to the public understanding of the discipline Contribute to writing funding bids Main Duties/Responsibilities The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below. Conduct own and original research Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as literature reviews, scientific experimentation, mathematical derivations Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding Contribute to developing new theoretical analyses, and techniques for devising new algorithms, in consultation with the project leader Coordinate case studies and testbeds, liaising with any (inter-disciplinary) participating collaborators Analyse and interpret data Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications in consultation with the project leader Disseminate research findings in research seminars, posters, conferences, industrial and/or academic research visits Contribute to impact generating activities such as workshop organisation, and preparation of a conference tutorial Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, under supervision of a project leader Contribute to writing bids for research funding, in consultation with the project leader. Person Specification Hold or be close to completing a PhD degree in Computer Science / Machine Learning, or Mathematics, or equivalent High level analytical and problem-solving ability Ability to communicate complex information clearly, including to non-specialists Fluency in at least one, and familiarity with at least one other of the following: Nonlinear Optimisation Algorithms, Statistical Learning Theory, High Dimensional Geometry and Random Processes, Algebraic methods of data analysis.
