Independent Living Service Volunteer Location: Nasmyth Place, Hillington, Glasgow Commitment: Minimum commitment is 1 day per week (can be split in to 2 half days) for or 1 shift per week for Transport and Resettlement. Within the West of Scotland, the British Red Cross run several highly successful and well respected Home from Hospital services. These services play a key role in helping reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and delayed discharges and enable people to live as independently as possible in their own home helping prevent hospital re-admissions and health and social care crises. We are looking for volunteers to support us with a wide range of activities across all aspects of our Home from Hospital services: Transporting (in Red Cross vehicles) patients home from hospital and helping them to resettle back into their home. Assessment and support planning shortly after someone's return home to help us understand how best to support them (by phone and face to face). Case work management (including onward referrals to statutory services and specialist organisations as well as local groups) Direct outreach support to people in and around their home and by phone Admin and logistic support in the offices Full driving licence is required for Transport and Resettlement roles and Outreach support roles (Outreach support will also require access to own vehicle). Transport and Resettlement roles operate 13:40 to 01:00, 7 days per week and are based out of our Hillington Office. All other roles operate 09:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday and are based at our Hillington Office or in the community. About the role The aim of this role is to place the person at the centre of what we do and help them get through a crisis by offering positive encouragement, practical help and emotional support. The Independent Living Service Volunteer will be the 'point of contact' for the service user and will enable them to access the services they require to alleviate the crisis and move on with their lives. The Volunteer will support the person to meet their goals and outcomes. As an Independent Living Service volunteer the primary aim is to enable the service user to recover from their crisis and to receive practical and emotional support. The Independent Living (IL) & Crisis Response (CR) service (IL/CR) are dedicated to making the lives of vulnerable people that little bit better. We're a small team dotted all over the country that share the same goal - to help those that need it most. From picking up groceries to helping out around the house, we're there to make a difference. There's nothing better than knowing the time we spent with someone made them feel safer, happier, and more able to deal with crisis. About the person We keep the service user at the heart of what we do, working to understand their needs and the difference we make. You need to have good interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and teamwork skills. Full training can be given for any necessary technical requirements. Also: Sensitivity when working with people vulnerable to crisis and an interest in their well-being and regaining independence An ability to provide patient, positive encouragement with the aim of helping people to help themselves An understanding of the diverse physical needs of service users Ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team Willingness to attend volunteer induction and appropriate training for the role Uphold the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and adhering to the Society's Equal Opportunities Policy As part of the recruitment and selection process volunteers are required to have a PVG/DBS/Access NI check to the appropriate level.
