Overview
PML has an internationally renowned marine system modelling group, currently numbering 20 scientists with a range in expertise including, marine chemistry, physiology, data assimilation, ecosystems, higher trophic levels and hydrodynamics. We use national and in-house state of the art computational facilities and address many of the UN sustainable development goals including those concerning food security, energy, sustainability and ecosystem health. A summary of our work can be found at https://www.pml.ac.uk/Modelling/Home We are seeking to employ a talented and creative scientist to work within a dynamic team of modellers and other researchers who have a broad interest in coastal, shelf-sea, oceanic and estuarine systems. The successful candidate will work on a range of projects directly connected to the investigation, evaluation and remediation of impacts of change (climate and anthropogenic) on the marine system in a policy and socially relevant framework. The post will focus on the development, optimisation, application and interpretation of coupled high resolution hydrodynamic-biogeochemical-ecosystem models with a subsequent pull-through to publication and benefit to society. The successful candidate will use the FVCOM unstructured grid and NEMO hydrodynamic models in tandem with the ERSEM biogeochemical-ecosystem model amongst others on a variety of domains, including UK, European and global shelf and coastal regions. Applicants will require a PhD, or a minimum of three years postgraduate experience or equivalent, in a relevant discipline. A proven track record in setting up, running and analysing results from coupled models of complex systems and a background in marine science is highly desirable. Proven ability in programming and computer skills (e.g. FORTRAN, PYTHON, LINUX, or similar) will be a definite advantage as will good mathematical and statistical skills, including ‘big data’ expertise. Any direct experience in the FVCOM, NEMO or ERSEM models would be very welcome. The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively and clearly within a highly interdisciplinary environment. Experience in authorship or co-authorship of peer-reviewed scientific papers and project reports is desirable. The candidate will be able to work with minimal supervision and will have excellent time-management skills.
