Working within Leonardo's Electronics UK Business Unit, this Executive level vacancy for a Engineering Safety Manager offers an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual to take a leadership position for Engineering Safety within Leonardo Electronics UK, ensuring that requirements are identified, and a Safety Management System is defined and consistently through a technical and cultural change approach. This would include consideration of national legislative and regulatory requirements to enhance the capability of our business. This role is offered within the Design Integrity function within the business which is responsible, through independent Engineering Governance, for requirements identification, deployment of effective and pragmatic policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to these principals, on behalf of the board. Design Integrity is a small group established across all sites and Lines of Business in the Electronics UK Business Unit that operates in conjunction with the Product System Design authorities and Project Engineering Managers. The successful candidate will be responsible for assuring a coordinated approach across all Engineering operational Safety related activities, irrespective of function and discipline and advising accordingly, including the capture of best practice and knowledge sharing across the business. Additional responsibilities will include the development of safety capability, analysis of safety performance and the identification of improvement initiatives. The role will require on going liaison and communication with all areas of the business. The successful candidate will be expected to act as point of contact for strategic and tactical safety process activity, including sourcing expert advice and assistance internally or externally in order to facilitate problem solving on projects in support of delivery. In addition, the role will be required to lead improvements in the overall safety culture. This role will suit a senior and experienced safety specialist who is interested in applying their skills to take up a lead role in a business critical and high visibility area, working on practical applications on a technically complex and diverse product portfolio for aerospace and defence. Key Responsibility Areas Act as point of contact within Leonardo Electronics UK for cross-site or cross-divisional Operational engineering safety issues, liaising with expert bodies as required to facilitate problem solving on projects. Represent Engineering within Leonardo Electronics UK at external events and industry forums as required Definition, establishment, deployment and maintenance of Operational Safety policies and objectives for the Electronics UK Business Unit, including generation of a Safety Culture in Engineering To solve problems, provide pragmatic guidance and advice to Integrated Project Teams for the implementation of safety related to services and engineering activities Where necessary it may be necessary to source expert advice and assistance (internally or externally). In order to provide an effective response to issues, and where required by business need, coordination of effective and efficient methods of work across all appropriate engineering practitioners will be required through direct management of SME's. Coordinating a robust occupational Safety Risk Management Process; benchmark and maintain a critical assessment of Leonardo's safety capability against other major companies in the aerospace and defence sector Identifying and researching emerging domain and technology level safety requirements in our roadmaps and related industry to ensure capability is in place to address this in a timely manner Establishing an effective Safety Assurance system of work. This would require strong collaboration between Quality, Engineering, SHE, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing to be effective. An output would be Product safety metrics analysis and improvement initiatives. Promote a safety culture through training and education and communications. Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required Ideally degree qualified in an engineering discipline with post graduate study to Masters or PhD level in Safety Engineering being highly desirable Experience of Engineering safety within the for aerospace or defence industry would be highly desirable Experience of Occupational Safety and Risk assessment including Dynamic risk assessment is essential Ideally the successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer, or have the academic qualifications to be able to achieve this Expert knowledge of Safety legislation in Land, Sea and Air domains defence would be highly desirable. Competence to understand the technical challenges of operational safety within the aerospace and defence industry is essential Personal integrity, leadership, management capability and behavioural characteristics to be able to undertake a key technical lead role within Leonardo Electronics UK. Excellent report writing, communication and inter-personal skills and the ability to work competently and efficiency under time pressure. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively to all levels within the business, and be able to explain complex technical issues to both a technical and non-technical audience.
