The Role The Lab Engineering Lead is a transformational leader who works collaboratively with other Lab roles to create empowered Teams who are motivated to take on business problems and realise value to customers through excellence in execution. The role will work alongside the Lab Product Owner in shaping the vision for the Lab, and as a result centre on setting the strategic direction for the engineering teams to demonstrate thought leadership on complex, multi-platform, technical delivery, across the entire lifecycle, from idea to realisation of value. The Engineering Lab Lead is accountable for the Run function of software systems that the Lab owns, in terms of incident, problem management and resolution, including 24x7 support. This also includes system risks, software vendor management, route to live and system design. A core goal of the Lab Engineering Lead is to work with Lab Chapters to understand where systems need improvement and work with the Lab Product Owner to prioritise system improvements alongside the delivery of product features. This will often mean communicating the importance of system improvements in business terms so that benefits are clearly realised. You'll be responsible for improving the Lab technical position whilst working and coaching a wide variety of technical Engineering disciplines, including Software Engineers, DevOps and Quality Engineers. You'll also increase Engineering efficiency, quality and release velocity whilst recruiting, retaining and developing engineering talent by supporting and pioneering Engineering Chapters, Guilds and Community activities. You'll foster a 'Fail Fast, Learn Faster' mentality within Teams to experiment and test new ways of engineering, to act as a change agent for engineering and team culture, fostering a test and learn approach, systems thinking and user experience led design. They share knowledge across Chapters and across broader Value Streams via Engineering Communities and Guilds. Key Accountabilities To be part of shaping and steering Complex Lending Lab engineering through its transformation journey through knowledge of best practise, past experience, and an understanding of industry direction and hands on experience of complex engineering. Run a lab of engineering resources that include: mainframes and other older technology back ends, full stack front end digital and integration 3rd party systems. Relentless focus on delivering business value through sound and fully rounded engineering methods and principles . Understands and ensures industry best practices are understood by Lab Engineering Community and related business functions. Fosters knowledge sharing through Lab Chapters to provide solutions for complex business problems where no precedent exists and facilitates implementation of solutions within Chapters where appropriate. Accountable for ensuring that all Engineering work in the Lab is carried out in line with Bank standards. Works with Product Owner & Team Product Owners, Architects and Chapter Leads to set the strategic direction, understand solution choices, whether operational or technological, and help define an incremental delivery plan. Leads, influences and agrees the strategy for the Lab and key design decisions across technology, operating model, customer experience and other design viewpoints. Works with the Chapter Leads to mentor and develop the technical team within the Lab providing clear and constructive feedback . Works with Agile Coaches to create opportunities for learning and growth for all Chapters Key capabilities, knowledge, skills and experience: Essential Inspire delivery whilst encouraging simplicity and developing confidence & trust. Recent technical implementation experience including colleague workflow and data management solutions Practical understanding of core competencies at a Leadership level: Agile, DevOps, Customer-First Development, Modern Architecture. Extensive track record of building strong senior level relationships and providing constructive support and challenge to directors and a respected leader who can make good technical decisions about modern technology and architecture. Devops Organisation experience is essential. Track record of working in Agile/non-waterfall environments and fully understands and approaches Agile practically. Strong Leadership Skills: experience of managing teams, able to influence, persuade and lead with a challenge mind-set. Demonstrate and apply exemplary software engineering practices and skills as well as mentor and nurture the talent at all levels of their software engineering community. Desirable Experience of the large corporate lending business and/or market. Start-up mentality and experience of quick releases with iterative and continuous delivery. Continuous Improvement mind-set: keeps up to date with tech, displaying awareness of outside companies, methodology and advancements. Thorough, practical understanding of customer-first design with practical experience in doing things for customers properly. Able to work effectively with multi-disciplinary, internal and external geographically distributed teams across the project lifecycle. Is an advocate for Engineering, provides a voice to engineers within the teams, identifying and supporting their teams in resolution of impediments and issues. Ability to motivate to challenge the status quo and an appreciation and understanding of first principles thinking.
