Overview

Core Purpose The role of Infrastructure Engineer is to engineer support and maintenance of infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy to improve system health and reliability. Working in a team of infrastructure specialists and engineers making sure services are delivered and used as required. The infrastructure engineering team will work with and supports third parties to provide infrastructure services. Summary As an Infrastructure Engineer you will deal with the day to day management and development of infrastructure products and contribute towards their design. You will be responsible for the operational stability of the infrastructure solutions, and be in a position to affect change in the on-going robustness and resilience of those products. You will collaborate with seniors and own Infrastructure Development Lifecycle Process as part of a delivery team focused on one or more products. Responsibilities Infrastructure Delivery & Improvement Design and implement infrastructure services/solutions to meet strategic plans and roadmaps; Deal with and take decisions on day-to-day operational management of services/solutions relating to own work area and to those they manage; Provide specialist technical support and assistance to projects ensuring definition and delivery of requisite non-functional requirements to architectural and roadmap developments; Management of an operational area, a function, or a project team, act independently on day-to-day issues. Infrastructure Support 3rd line support for incidents, problems and changes; Apply different techniques to methods in analysing and resolving problems, working up new practices and procedures or modify existing processes to improve performance; Providing technical support and assistance; Apply different techniques to methods in analysing and resolving problems, working up new practices and procedures or modify existing processes to improve performance. Information Management Provide reports of Service performance to the Senior Infrastructure Engineer and other senior leadership members from Digital, reporting against agreed KPIs and via the relevant reporting channels and forums; Management of the risk register for individual technical area, ensuring appropriate reporting and mitigation plans and actions are implemented. Strategic & Financial Management Authority to commit the organisation to expenditure with third party suppliers and the requirement to achieve best value for money; Managing and committing specified sums of money over a period of time; Responsible for preparation of budget requests, project plans, business cases for large items of expenditure. Technical Skills Information Security (DDaT) Understands information security and the types of security controls that can be used to mitigate security threats within solutions and services. (Level 2) IT Infrastructure (DDaT) Builds, configures, administers and supports infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open source packages and solutions, virtual and cloud including IaaS, PaaS, SaaS. (level 2) Problem management (DDaT) Ensures that the right actions are taken to investigate, resolve and anticipate problems. Coordinates the team to investigate problems, implement solutions and take preventative measures. Able to dissect a problem to its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes. Able to troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities. Takes accountability of issues that occur and is proactive in searching for potential problems. Achieves excellent user outcomes. (level 3) Service focus (DDaT) Sees the bigger picture by taking groups of services, investigating how to get the best of underlying services. (level 3) Systems Integration (DDaT) Able to build and test simple interfaces, or can work on more complex integration as part of a wider team. (level 2) Technical breadth (DDaT) Has a deep understanding of the technical concepts required in their role and understands how these fit into the wider technical landscape. Understands the limitations of digital technology. (level 3) Test Analysis (DDaT) Able to think outside the box, ask the right questions and critically evaluate and communicate findings to a larger team. Leads investigative work into problems and opportunities in existing processes, driving the collection of information and creation of recommendations for improvements. Can absorb large amounts of conflicting information and use it to determine solutions. (level 3) Technical Specialisms General Desirable to have experience working with these technologies, methods and frameworks. Hosting Infrastructure - Level 2; IT Security – Level 2; IT Service Management, e.g. ITIL Service Management framework – Level 3; Virtual/Cloud packages/solutions, e.g. IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, DBaaS – Level 2; Content Hardware Management Hardware – Level 2. Citrix Experience in providing Citrix solutions to a large organisation, for a variety of people with different access needs. Packaging – Citrix Experience in Citrix Packaging applications to ensure repeatability and ease of load balancing. Ability to use packaging and virtualisation techniques to manage server applications. Software As a Service - Licensing, Usage and implementation – Level 2; Software Audit – Level 2; Inventory Management – Level 2; Virtual Application on Citrix - Design, build and operate – Level 2; Microsoft App V4.6 packaging – Level 4. Desktop Experience providing and operating desktop services including office products, virtualised technologies and distribution toolsets. This role required large scale product delivery across multiple product providers. Virtual Servers - Design, Build and Operate – Level 4; Windows 10 – Level 4; Microsoft Exchange – Level 4; Windows Server 2012 – Level 4; Active Directory – Level 4; Anti-Virus and Endpoint Encryption including Symantec Product set – Level 4; Software Distribution Products, e.g. Radia – Level 4; Virtualisation Technologies, eg. VMWare – Level 4; Patch Management Tools – Level 4; Technical experience of assistive technologies (for example Dragon / JAWS / Read/Write Gold / Microsoft Native capability) – Level 4. Desktop Macbooks Experience designing, building and operating Macbooks and associated services in an enterprise environment. This role required large scale product delivery across multiple product providers, with the ability to leverage multiple products and toolsets to enable optimised platforms for staff. Virtual Services - Design, Build and Operate (AWS, Azure, VMWare) – Level 3; Macbooks OS – Build and Operate – Level 3; ZScaler, OKTA, Jamf – Level 2; Terrform – Level 2; Patch Management Tools – Level 4. Experience Applicants need to have an in-depth technical knowledge of both Citrix and Ivanti, ideally obtained in a large organisation.
