Working as a Senior Electrical Engineer and joining an integral part of the UK’s Defence will provide you with an opportunity to support challenging, diverse and unique projects. Recently, £200M has been invested into infrastructure to enable the state of the art F-35 Lightning to take flight, whilst keeping the base full operation. The high voltage supply to RAF Lossiemouth is being reinforced necessitating changes to the on-site distribution and generation with consideration being given to the provision of a new photovoltaic array facility. These are once in a life time projects that you will be able to make a difference to. You will also have an opportunity to work with other specialists and provide both technical support and assurance activities on a variety of electrical systems in both the UK and overseas to ensure we meet our statutory obligations and military capability. These electrical systems range from extensive high voltage distribution and generation systems to electrical services within accommodation facilities, and also include specialist facilities such as: explosive and fuel installations, shore to ship supplies, airfield lighting, and renewable energy systems. Responsibilities A Senior Electrical Engineer will support the Head of Electrical Infrastructure Team, who who holds the technical responsibility in the following main areas: • The implementation of the MOD’s electrical safe system of work including the development of the safety rules and procedures. • To undertake assurance activities on electrical systems, equipment, and safety rules and procedures • To investigate electrical incidents, accidents, and near misses and, where necessary, write Safety Alerts. • To represent MOD on MOD, NATO, national standardisation and industry committees; benchmark current policies and standards and update where necessary. • To provide specialist technical support to clients The Senior Electrical Engineer (HV/LV) will be primarily responsible for : • Supply arrangements • Generation • Distribution • Sub station earthing systems • Renewable Systems This position will provide you with an opportunity to travel within the UK and overseas in line with business need. It should be noted that some locations are particularly remote and travel to them can be difficult. Essential Experience & Skills • Minimum of a Degree level (e.g. a Level 6 qualification) in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent subject matter • Chartered Professional Engineer (or working towards) with recent & relevant work experience of electrical systems and equipment. • Working knowledge of principal legislative, MOD policy, and supporting documents covering high and low voltage distribution, generation, renewable and earthing systems (e.g. EAWR 89, DSEAR 02, HSR24, ACOP L138, HSG85, JSP375 Part 2 Volume 3, DIO Practitioner Guides, etc.) • Working knowledge of national, international, and industry standards for the design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of high and low voltage distribution, generation, renewable and earthing systems (e.g. BS EN 61936-1, BS EN 50549-1, BS EN 62771 series, BS EN 50522, BS7430) • Experience in the implementation of electrical safe systems of work • UK Driving Licence: Travel to sites with UK and overseas will be required, some of which can be remote that candidates may struggle to access these locations by public transport alone. • Corporate member of an appropriate Institution / institute pertinent to electrical engineering such as The Institution of Engineering and Technology or CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers). Desirable Experience & Skills Experience and knowledge of low voltage electrical installations including those installed in potentially explosive atmospheres is desirable.
