Overview
Our client manufactures a complete range of high performance floor coatings, repair products and ancillary facilities management products direct to the end-user. They been established in the UK for 90 years and in its present form for over 30 years. Successful satellite businesses have been launched in France and Germany. Job Summary: The Group Chemist will work alongside a technical team based at the groups UK manufacturing facility, the role focuses on new product development and innovation in the area of synthesis and formulation of a wide range of paints, coatings and repair materials for various applications. Ensure that product development projects meet technical, performance, legislation requirement, costs and timescale deadlines for introduction into the product range. Proactively suggest new projects and discuss new projects within NPD meetings working with the Product Manager. Provide technical support to sales/marketing/ production within the Group and sister companies. Formulate and produce premium products to generate revenue through sales. Key Duties: Ensure that R & D projects for new/modified products progress within the required timescales and ensure that formulation/costs/testing/packaging/label information/etc. are considered from initiation to completion of the product. Liaise across all departments/companies to ensure that projects progress within the specified timescales and keep the Product Manager fully informed of progress. Produce handover forms for new/improved products and ensure all required information (formulations/manufacturing instructions/pack sizes/MSDS/label) is provided to allow production and manufacture to proceed within required timescales. Consult with the group Regulatory Department to ensure MSDS information is created and organised for all products and updates are carried out when required. Ensure MSDS information integration into product labels. Assist with the preparation of product Technical Data Sheets in co-operation with Product Manager Maintain records and samples of R &D work. Maintain manufacturing records, product standards and formulations. Resolve any manufacturing issues concerning batch production and raw material shortages/replacement. Continually consider raw material cost savings/rationalisation to reduce raw material stocks were feasible. Determine the feasibility of new product ideas before proceeding with laboratory evaluation. Monitor journals and industry associations (BCF) for new innovations and developments in technology, raw materials, application processes and equipment. Liaison with Group Regulatory Department regarding UK, European and worldwide legislation for restrictions, hazard labelling and transport, and advise the relevant departments. Liaise with raw material suppliers for new or more cost effective alternatives. Adapt current formulations with any changes in raw materials either due to restriction or availability. Discuss any raw material changes with Tor Coatings to ensure any changes do not cause any stocking/disposal issues Communicate with the Product Manager to pass technical information through to sales and marketing in the UK and Europe. Assist with training and demonstration of new and existing products to the sales team within the Group. Design and execution of experimental work. Investigate customer complaints, including site visits and report the outcome of visits. Determine if any product modifications/upgrades are required based on these visits. Initiate new projects if required. Produce monthly reports covering progress over the last month and projections for the next. Preparation of product samples, including specific customer requests and colour matches, when required. Attend relevant conferences and training seminars. Required Knowledge & Competencies: Manage a wide range of projects to deliver new products within specified timescales. Principles of coating technology with a strong emphasis on epoxy resin paint technology Understanding the formulating process of various paint mediums and repair products. Understand and apply the latest regulations and legislation applicable to the supply of coatings and repair systems into Europe (VOC legislation, REACH, GHS, CLP). Pass any relevant information to Product Manager that may require product update. Required Education and Qualifications: Degree - Applied Chemistry. Relevant level of experience in the development of coatings and repair products. In return our client is offering an attractive salary package.
