Overview

Biotechnology Scientist RSR Limited Cardiff The Company RSR is a well-established developer and producer of medical diagnostic kits with key applications in autoimmune thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes mellitus, neuroimmunology and other autoimmune diseases. RSR also provides high quality reagents for medical diagnostic manufacturers world-wide. The company’s products are exported to overseas markets including the European Union, the USA, Japan and China. The company has a long history of cutting edge research in particular on the interaction between autoantigens and autoantibodies at the molecular level. These are presented at scientific meetings and published in scientific journals. Autoimmune responses may occur in the central or peripheral nervous system resulting in neuronal damage, axonal injury, demyelination or destruction of the neuromuscular junction. There is a broad spectrum of immune-mediated disorders affecting the nervous system including myasthenia gravis, neuromyelitis optica, multiple sclerosis and Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome. Autoantibodies to receptors for neurotransmitters, synaptic proteins or to ion channels are markers of these autoimmune responses. Furthermore, in the case of myasthenia gravis autoantibodies to the acetylcholine receptor are considered pathogenic. RSR has the expertise in development and manufacture of highly sensitive and specific assay kits for the measurement of autoantibodies targeting the nervous system. Results of autoantibody tests are essential for an accurate diagnosis which in turn determines the treatment strategies and leads to better outcomes for patients. Thus, RSR's kits provide valuable tools for the management of patients with various neuroimmune conditions. The Position The Scientist will join a dynamic team working on projects related to autoimmunity to the nervous system at RSR's FIRS Laboratories . The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues on production of key reagents for manufacturing assay kits for detecting autoantibodies to targets in the nervous system. The Scientist will collaborate with production teams to ensure the best performance and quality of the kits. The Scientist will be expected to join in the Research and Development activities of the team. This will include improvements and adjustment to existing products, developing new assay systems, developing new technologies, in depth studies of the characteristics of the key reagents and the opportunities to join in collaborative projects with academic institutions and other organisations.
