Overview

Specialist Oncology Nurse Coordinator As a Charity, our Client’s mission is to make sure cancer patients are given the information, support and treatment they need. Providing support to those affected by eye cancer, they aim to give clear and accurate information to patients, family and friends alike so that they can make educated choices. They are seeking a Specialist Nurse Coordinator to provide practical information and emotional support to meet the needs of patients, families and carers with ocular melanoma. These patients are already supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists for their primary tumour and so a large part of this role will be to support patients who have already been treated or if their disease had spread to other organs. This is typically when patients have the most difficulty managing aspects of their care. This will be a new role building on existing relationships with specialist centres managing both primary and secondary ocular melanoma patients with the aim of improving patient’s outcomes and overall experience. Successful applicants will be the first of a small team of specialist nurses. This role has been managed by the National Director to date and is primarily office-based supporting patients through our Helpline and liaising with medical teams to resolve any queries people have. Calls are typically from newly diagnosed patients or from patient’s whose cancer has progressed. The helpline is also open to family members or friends supporting people with this condition. You will be supported by a small team of staff who in turn support their membership and fundraisers to ensure the sustainability of this role. You would need: To be a registered nurse with a valid NMC pin Ability to Travel/Drive Ability to spend 5-10 days a month offsite To be self-motivated Excellent Communication Previous Oncology nursing or palliative care experience Keep abreast of national policies, treatment regimes and guidance. Subject to enhanced DBS check To answer enquiries from people affected by ocular melanoma via telephone, email and online forum. Keeping patients and their families informed about developments in the field of ocular melanoma, research, clinical trials and related topics. To respond to individual enquiries with compassion, respect and maintaining confidentiality. Ensure external contacts such as hospitals, clinical nurse specialists, eye care liaison officers are supplied with clinical publications relevant to ocular melanoma and other printed resources as requested Develop, maintain and expand the links formed with hospitals, other charities and ocular melanoma support groups Ensuring up to date information is communicated to our Helpline Volunteers, so adequate cover is in place Manage patient "Buddy" system providing peer to peer contact based on individual needs. Encourage support from local palliative care teams where appropriate. Signposting FREE counselling/ talking therapies via GP. Work with the administrative staff to ensure all related administration is completed and managed using a range of IT equipment and software. Assist with compiling KPIs for monitoring and evaluation purposes. Use a Salesforce database to input and retrieve data. Reporting to National Director in the first instance Clinical Supervisor Helpline Volunteers Essential Experience in oncology nursing (band 5 or higher) Minimum of 5 years’ experience working at band 5 or higher Understanding of the needs of people affected by problems and their relatives and friends Experience of providing health information, health education or counselling Experience of working independently at band 6 or higher Knowledge and understanding of the NHS, health and social care issues Educated to a masters degree level or equivalent Able to respond sensitively to people affected by ocular melanoma Enthusiasm for consistently producing high-quality work and services Good IT skills including MS Office, Outlook and CRM databases Excellent verbal communication skills; confident and compassionate phone manner Self-confident, show emotional intelligence, proactive and empathetic A 'can-do’ attitude and a positive 'warm’ manner Ability and willingness to learn and develop professionally in line with the requirements of the role Job Types: Full-time, Permanent Salary: £37,750.00 to £43,772.00 /year Experience: palliative care and/or oncology nursing: 1 year (Preferred) Band 5 or higher: 5 years (Required) Education: Master's (Required) Important information Slough SL3 Full-time, Permanent £37,750 - £43,772 a year Full-time - 37 hours per week.
