About the Role We now have an excellent opportunity for a talented Linux Systems Administrator to join the Diamond Scientific Computing team and make a real contribution to cutting edge science while developing your career. The team is responsible for all of the science-enabling computing that our researchers require to get the best results as quickly as possible. You will pitch in with any challenges that come our way, there is no limit to what you can learn. Innovation and creativity are encouraged, as well as a desire to automate as much as practically possible. Working independently and the ability to collaborate are key. Further responsibilities will include: Design, development, commissioning and operational support of high-performance computer and storage systems to support the scientific capabilities of Diamond. Engaging closely with scientists, engineers and users to provide support and to inform the development of new systems. Commission and diagnose faults in bespoke computer systems. Developing automation tools for system administration tasks. Contributing to the processes, associated software development and data management to support the design and operation of computer systems throughout Diamond. A flexible approach to work is required with some out of hours working during peak times, along with occasional UK and overseas travel. About You You will be a keen problem solver with a desire to learn and expand your horizons. You will be educated to degree level in a computing or science subject or demonstrate equivalent working experience. You will have experience of systems administration of Linux or Unix and GNU, including experience of Linux command line and simple scripting. You will also have experience of modern computer systems; common hardware configurations and management, along with experience of common network protocols such as PXE, DHCP, DNS and NAT. Any experience of scripting languages such as Perl or Python are desirable, as is experience of remote administration of computer systems. You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills to interact with staff and facility users at all levels.
