About the Role We now have an excellent opportunity for a talented Windows Systems Administrator to join the Diamond Scientific Computing team and make a real contribution to cutting edge science by providing computing support to the Diamond Electron Microscopy (EM) activities. EM systems are a mixture of primarily Microsoft, but also Linux and some specialised technologies. Due to an expansion of EM activity this new opportunity requires somebody with skills that can cut across the technologies used by EM and similar instruments, providing an opportunity to learn and integrate new technologies such as low latency network fabrics and novel storage solutions The Scientific Computing Team is responsible for all of the science-enabling computing that our researchers require to get the best results as quickly as possible. You will pitch in with any challenges that come our way, there is no limit to what you can learn. Innovation and creativity are encouraged, as well as a desire to automate as much as practically possible. Further responsibilities will include: Design, development, commissioning and operational support of high-performance computer and storage systems to support the EM capabilities of Diamond. Engaging closely with subject matter experts in a variety of technical fields to inform the development of new systems. Commission and diagnose faults in bespoke computer systems. Developing automation tools for system administration tasks. Contributing to the processes, associated software development and data management to support the design and operation of computer systems. A flexible approach to work is required with some out of hours working during peak times, along with occasional UK and overseas travel. About You You will be a keen problem solver with a desire to learn new skills and technologies. You will be educated to degree level in a computing or science subject or demonstrate equivalent working experience. You will have experience of systems administration in Windows with any Linux or Unix experience beneficial. You will also have experience of modern computer systems; common hardware configurations and management, along with experience of common network protocols such as PXE, DHCP, DNS and NAT. Any experience of scripting languages such as Perl or Python are desirable, as is experience of remote administration of computer systems. You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills to interact with staff and facility users at all levels.
