The Project Engineering Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) presently has a broad range of challenging projects working with the Diamond Light Source, ISIS, CERN, Central Laser Facility, and RAL Space. In joining us you will be working on the science experiments that will be making the ground breaking discoveries of the next 10 or 20 years. About the Role We are looking for engineers to work in the project management, design, manufacture, procurement, assembly, installation, integration, and commissioning of complex mechanical systems in support of projects. We require an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer, to make an immediate impact, complementing the existing team. This role will require you to work closely with in-house and external engineers and scientists to understand their requirements and transform their ideas into engineered solutions. About You You will have a strong background in Mechanical Engineering, and have experience of working as a design engineer, presenting ideas to customers and be skilled in the writing of technical papers and reports.We are interested in applicants with either a degree in mechanical engineering or apprentice trained technicians with a strong design background in relevant fields. Experience in the specification and procurement of engineering systems is essential. Enthusiasm towards assembling and commissioning systems that you have been involved in the design of is a definite advantage. You will also be able to: Produce creative and innovative designs solutions and concepts through the use of 2D & 3D CAD systems. Attend and contribute to technical meetings/reviews and produce associated documentation to meet the requirements of relevant Quality Management System. Take a pro-active, self-motivated, leading role in the delivery of projects. Generate models, drawings and specifications to enable manufacture/procurement of parts and assemblies. Contribute to all projects at all phases of their lifecycle, working the design from concept through to final design, manufacture, assembly, commissioning and handover. Liaise with customers and staff at all levels including engineers, scientists and technicians. Have hands on experience building and commissioning engineering systems including addressing issues as they occur.
