Neutrons and Gammas Group Leader Job Ref: 4392 Job Title: Neutrons and Gammas Group Leader Job Type: Permanent, Full Time Location: Culham, Oxfordshire Salary: £55,610 - £62,197 Excellent benefits including outstanding pension scheme Closing Date: 14th April 2020 The UK Atomic Energy Authority have an opportunity for a physicist to take on the Group Leader role for the Neutron and Gamma Diagnostics team within the Tokamak Science Diagnostics Unit. The Diagnostics Unit within the Tokamak Science Department is responsible for operating, maintaining and analysing data from many different measurement instruments on the JET tokamak. The Neutrons and Gammas Group Leader manages an interdisciplinary group of circa 6 employees and is responsible for the maintenance, operation, calibration and development of JET neutron and gamma diagnostics. The successful applicant will play an important role in the upcoming deuterium-tritium experiments on JET, designed to sustain high fusion performance for prolonged periods. Key accountabilities/responsibilities include: - Lead and manage the staff and secondees of the Neutrons and Gammas team in support of JET operations. - Be responsible for all aspects of staff management and development, this will include agreeing personal development plans, providing job performance feedback, setting objectives, completing staff appraisals and ensuring that all the relevant UKAEA mandatory training requirements are completed. - Identify opportunities for staff development and coaching and motivating them to achieve their goals. - Oversee the commissioning, maintenance, operation and calibration of JET neutron and gamma diagnostics including the development of new techniques. - Oversee the production of analysed data from JET neutron and gamma diagnostics including the development of software for intershot and off-line analysis. Perform cross-checks with other measurements to check/test consistency and liaise with users to ensure their requirements are met and assist them with data interpretation. - Manage the activities of the group with regards to diagnostic development and upgrade projects. - Report the status of diagnostics to both UKAEA and external stakeholders. - Ensure compliance with UKAEA safety and quality systems regarding the operation of group diagnostics. - Identify capability needs within the group to meet UKAEA strategic aims and objectives and ensure that the needs are met through staff development and recruitment. - Provide world-leading expert analysis with regards to gamma and neutron diagnostics. Knowledge, skills and experience Essential - Strong knowledge of nuclear physics. - PhD in physics or equivalent research experience. - Experience of operating in a physics research environment. Desirable - PhD in nuclear physics. - Experience in leading an interdisciplinary team in a research environment. - Experience in the design and operation of plasma neutron and/or gamma diagnostics. - Knowledge of general tokamak and/or plasma physics. - Experience of performing data analysis, including writing and maintaining codes.
