About Us Diamond Light Source is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. It houses the UK’s synchrotron light source, producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun, to probe the structure and composition of matter. From viruses and vaccines, to alternative energy solutions and nanotechnology, it underpins research and innovation for more than 8000 scientists. The Diamond Data Analysis group provides a comprehensive, imaginative and often complex suite of bespoke software tools written in Java, Python and C++. Our role is to help our scientists capture experimental information, process and visualise terabytes of multidimensional data on the fly, and apply complex mathematical, fitting or theoretical models to interpret their results. About the Role We now have an opportunity for a talented Software Scientist to join the Data Analysis Software Group, working with the Ada Lovelace Centre (ALC) to develop and support cutting-edge scientific software in a distributed computing environment. The ALC is an integrated, cross-disciplinary data intensive science centre for better exploitation of research carried out at Diamond and other national research facilities. ALC will provide computing hardware, build software and provide computational and data analytics expertise that will spark a paradigm shift in the capability of scientists to design, analyse and interpret experiments. This role will form the Diamond support role for analysis, making the most effective use of the ALC hardware and software. The development of synchrotron technology proceeds at a blistering, relentless pace and requires a cutting edge and exceptionally resilient technical estate to facilitate its critical work, turning theoretical science into practical and often life-changing discoveries. The Software Scientist will help drive this innovation forward and help exploit the opportunities of the ALC. Working within a close-knit and highly skilled group, you will collaborate and have the opportunity to support and develop other team members, and the opportunity to create new projects. Your experience and underlying knowledge will permeate throughout the wider team, leading initiatives and inspiring others. Through collaborating with similar facilities, you will help us to incorporate new methods, technologies and ways of working into a distributed computing environment, exploiting public and private cloud resources to automate and predict associated trends in experimental data. Successful applicants will be considered as either a Software Scientist or Senior Software Scientist, depending on the strength of your knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications. About You You will hold a degree in a STEM subject or demonstrate significant equivalent experience. Your experience of collecting and transforming requirements, delivering and designing innovative software will lead to your success. You will be proficient in technologies such as Java, Python and have a sound knowledge of software requirements, including deployment, in a distributed environment. You will hold practical experience of the full Software Development Lifecycle and crucially, demonstrate a passion to learn and think creatively in the solutions we provide to enable science. You will have experience of using, developing and utilising software on HPC or cloud solutions, and a good understanding of DevOps practices and tools including configuration management tools. Appointment at a Senior level will require a PhD or equivalent experience, a proven track record of technical excellence, an ability to supervise or mentor small teams, a sound understanding of the science domain and vision for what the role can achieve. You will display good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills to interact effectively with staff at all levels. Benefits Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to ensure an excellent work/life balance including 25 days’ annual leave, 13 days statutory and company holidays, flexible working hours, an onsite nursery, an excellent pension scheme, and social and sporting activities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable. To Apply Diamond is a thriving international organisation, attracting a diverse range of talented individuals from around the world. Our staff currently comprises 39 nationalities and we welcome applications from everyone interested in joining us.
