Overview
Islington is one of the most vibrant and dynamic parts of London and is experiencing significant growth in housing and employment. The council has adopted ambitious planning policies to ensure that all our communities' benefit from this growth whilst protecting and enhancing the borough's unique character. Enhancing the built environment through high quality design is therefore an important Council objective. Furthermore, Islington's 41 conservation areas (covering at least 50% of the borough) and over 4,500 statutorily listed buildings, which greatly contribute to the character, economy and community pride of the borough, require careful protection and management of change. We have an exciting opportunity to join the Design & Conservation Team in the role of Principle Design and Conservation officer. You would be joining a team of urban design and conservation experts, who work to preserve and enhance the borough's architectural heritage and contribute to the delivery of high-quality new development. Therefore, we are looking for a dynamic, positive professional who will be able to assist the team in the delivery of design excellence within Islington's historic environment and wider townscape by balancing growth, conservation and high-quality place making. You must demonstrate a commitment to design quality and conservation best practice, working creatively and constructively with planning officers, applicants, other council departments and various stakeholders to ensure that the council's urban design and conservation aspirations as well as wider planning priorities are delivered. You must be able to provide high quality urban design and heritage advice throughout the Council's development management processes, to contribute to related projects such as the running of the Islington Design Review Panel, and to promote and champion high-quality design as well as the conservation of Islington's built environment. You must possess strong communication skills with the ability to offer technical critique of development proposals, in particular focusing on heritage matters across the spectrum of application types and scales. This role has the opportunity within it for development, and the service can offer the ability to obtain experience on a range of applications from minor applications to major development proposals. You will have the ability to use your initiative to solve problems and find creative solutions. You will have the skills and experience to: Understand the principles of excellent design and place-making and have experience (or demonstrable ability) to advise on how applicants can achieve high quality development within a dense 'cheek-by-jowl' context. Have a track record of applying the statutory and NPPF tests to the preservation and enhancement of conservation areas, listed buildings and other heritage assets. Work closely and collaboratively with planners and other consultees to deliver high quality design and heritage advice.
